How come character design in anime was so much better in the 90s and early 2000s? I genuinely have a hard time telling characters from completely different anime apart sometimes when it comes to anime from 2010 onwards.

Name five series from 2010 onward you have watched that gave you this opinion.

The main one that stood out to me was a character from this one anime that I haven't seen and can't remember the name of, but I see it posted on /a/ fairly frequently right now and there's a character that is basically just a clone of Esdeath from Akame Ga Kill. Ironically, I think Esdeath is an example of great character design, along with Akame Ga Kill as a whole. There are others from anime I actually have watched but they're all forgettable enough that I can't name them off hand. I've been watching a lot of older anime recently and the frequency of anime with really unique character designs really stuck out to me. I know there's plenty of generic characters in older anime too, but the ceiling was a lot higher back then than it is now and the frequency of really unique design was higher too.
