This show went from one of the most popular anime ever to being totally forgotten.
it's crazy how a bad cash grab sequel can kill interest in a series.

You still have that one anon spamming the gay crosdresser panty shot once a month pretending the Adult Swim seasons were good, they were so awful that they went from 6 episode seasons to 3 to then cancel the plans they had for more due to how poorly they did, Adult Swim originals suck ass, the people behind Lazarus said that they originally wanted the show to have more comedy ala Space Dandy but Adult Swim told them that since Space Dandy did poorly they wanted Lazarus to be more like "Cowboy Bebop" that show ended up being shit as a result and you can tell it was due to executive melding, they really sucked hard, FLCL never needed 4 fucking seasons of sequels and prequels plus they were so toned down compared to the OG OVAs that the people in charge straight up said they told the animators to tone the series down as much as possible compared to the original OVAs so it would be appropriate for "modern audiences", kinda like what the current Jigoku Sensei Nube remake's staff was told

Was the original ever meant to "appeal to the youth"? To me flcl felt more like a writer yearning for his days as a middle school boy in a small town, which is why it was so comfy

I look at the original as having a realistic setting that viewers could relate to. Despite the surreal elements that are out of this world and unknown, the surreal elements in the sequel are part of the Earth setting. Junkyard housing complex with slavery, transformer amusement park, trips to Mars, rock aliens.
The sequels try so hard to be zany and weird that its character feel like cartoon characters, where the original its character's emotions are just exaggerated through animation. Sure, Haruko has super abilities, but why is this bitch in a block of cement?

Another original Gainax series that was brought by other studio to be milked some more would be Panty & Stocking, the new season is really toned down compared to the first one
>Comedy is a lot less offensive and "dark/edgy"
>Just VERY vaguely hinting to Kneesocks & Scanty being a couple JUST once but without it being explicit about it like season 1 was
>Instead of being wacky screeching bitches the Demon Sister are mostly played as the serious characters of the series, same with Stocking, Panty is the only crazy one now for some reason
>Garterbelt hasn't molested any boys this season
>Censoring Garterbelt's lips and crosses from his design (despite him having the pink lips and crosses in the initial promo art and trailers for season 2)
>Removing all the pink lips from black characters despite them all having those in season 1
>Panty, Stocking, Kneesocks and Scanty no longer being schoolgirls with no mention of the school whatsoever and no school episodes at all like in season 1, despite the show taking place only 5 minutes after season 1, them never graduating and them not being seniors at all meaning they had to go to school for at least one more year before graduating
>Same for Brief
But despite all that I still think they did a better job than the FLCL sequels overall so far

Them being school girls wasn't really a setting featured throughout the series, it was only shown for two episodes from what I remember. Also didn't the school get destroyed? Overall, it's not like Trigger came out and said they're not in school anymore. Honestly I hope they prove you wrong on that. Maybe the football episode is in school. Love to see Panty in a school uniform again.

Old-as-fuck oldfag here: FLCL was definitely a "right time, right place" anime. Being released in the peak of the Invader Zim mall goth era, a very fast paced and loud show that rapid-fired off tons of Jap-Only humor and obscure (by the west's perceptive) references made it come off as quirky and lol so randumb XD which appealed to the people watching it. Backed by a pretty rocking soundtrack from an unknown Jap band that used tons and tons of English so it would catch on to the English-speakers ears enough that they sing along to Little Masters or pretend to sing to Ride on Shooting Star gave it that extra oomph of memorability.

Looking back on it now, it's still a really good story, and knowing enough about Japanese culture sort of unmasks the actual intent from lolsorandumb into just a kinda nerdy coming-of-age story that doesn't necessarily connect everything properly but still has a lot of its charms. But to people who don't understand Jap culture will probably just think this is random for random's sake and in this modern day era, that doesn't really sell as well.

To emphasize the point that most people who made it famous didn't get it, I've had to explain the actual plot and jokes to dozens of people by now who are my age that I've brought it up with in conversation.

Same. Going from a typical anime to this just feels like a collosal downgrade. Anime is usually well shaded and detailed but this garbage is so cheap and tacky by comparison. FLCL is flat most of the time and rarely bothers to animate shadows. The sliding stills for vehicles and other poorly drawn crap just makes it even worse too. It's got a bunch of fluid sequences but the overall production value on most of those cuts isn't anything impressive. They cut lots of corners.

Probably for the best. The plot for FLCL doesn't give a shit about what Medical Mechanica is, or Haruko or Atomsk. Everything is mostly told from Noata's point of view. One of my favorite shots is seeing the only interior of MM being a lobby. It's a mystery best left alone. The sequel shows a spiral staircase with some big ass mother brain in it. The only details FLCL goes into is N.O. While the original doesn't have to explain shit, the sequels create a bunch of made up lore that confuses the fuck out of me. But when the sequels add a bunch of mysterious back story to things like Hidomi's father and headphones WAS THAT NOATA? it builds up feeling like nothing. Kana on the other hand still has a father whose face is always obscured by a newspaper IS THAT NAOTA? But her friend Pets is a clusterfuck of sudden back story with her weird rich family and her hating Kana for some reason. With Naota, the anime never goes into detail what happened to his mother, though it wouldn't be important to the plot the way Progressive tried to make it and fuck it up.

You're the type of retard who thinks everything needs to be permanent and endless or else it's not real.
Let me clue you in on something that you've probably never considered before; you're not supposed to be hyper-fixated on shit forever.
A book comes out, you read, you enjoy it, you move on.
Video game? Play it, enjoy it, move on.
Anime? Watch it, enjoy it, move on.
Just because I don't want to watch the same show over and over and OVER AND OVER for fucking years straight and talk about it incessantly does not mean it isn't good. It was good, it's just that you're taking your own freakish, autistic behavior for granted.
I've already fucking watched FLCL, I've already talked about it, the well is just fucking DRY now. There's not unlimited shit to talk about.
