It's part of the meta-genre of perfect gateway anime. Not too overburdened with unfamilar tropes or complex storytelling, but still somewhat serious and mature. Also a bit more niche. It fits nicely with stuff like Trigun, Mirai Nikki and SAO. I would always recommend a newfriend a series like this for their first """real""" anime.

it's unfortunate the story isn't that good. the ending of the anime was also really bad.
i got the sense that elfin lied was actually a comedy in disguise because it's got such funny moments, which is why i like it, but if the story was actually good then a remake would be incredible.
i haven't read the manga however, i hear the manga is different.

I wish it didn't take itself SO seriously. I can enjoy Elfen Lied on the level of pulpy edgy gorepunk like The Machine Girl and Tokyo Gore police, but it tends to be so dour that it sucks some of the fun out of it.

I watched and read this so many years ago there's very little I remember, but I recall Bando being my favorite character and the scene where he fights the guy who shoots the spike balls was my favorite part. I never picked up on the "comedy in disguise" thing, but I was a teenager back then so it probably went over my head. I flipped through some pages fairly recently and pic related made me laugh, so I can see it.
