[Judas] Jujutsu Kaisen - S01E03.mkv_snapshot_17.54_[2025.07.30_19.18.33]
Why are female characters in shonen typically worth a bag of shit outside of their fanservice potential? I can't think of any that are known for having the best fights or moments in their respective show.

This is like asking why male characters are useless in shojo

Suspension of disbelief only goes so far. The notion of a woman showing the best fighting performance is just too absurd to commit it to paper outside the most zany of comedy manga.

Because people who want good female characters have shojo

If you want good male characters, you read shonen
If you want good females, you read shojo

this moment is more a victim of terrible execution at every level rather than just the fact that maki is (allegedly) female

>best fight

How would one even achieve this if there are also respectable males in a show?

Revy, Mikoto, Mononoke & Eboshi, Spy X Spy assassin girl whose name I can't remember, Maki from Soul Eater, and several others without the point getting buried here do come to mind. Sakura even had a pinnacle moment vs. Sasori, which we never saw again thereafter. Frieren, though not immediately apparent that it's shonen, also has a women in its wheelhouse of powerhouses.

It appears to be a difficult thing for most writers, finding a way to strike balance between beautiful and deadly, especially in a setting where the main protagonist and antagonists are typically men.

Toph is an example of an outstanding girl character who can kick ass with the best of them. It's all about how much thought the author has given to their characters and their setting. As it turns out, most authors are writing to simply pay bills and make money.

Shounen mangaka typically struggle with trying to fit a feminine character into the genre. They usually land on support / healer or otherwise give up and just make them butch (ie get rid of the feminine aspect).

IMO the issue with Sakura is that her abilities aren't particularly interesting visually

Sure, Naruto only has Shadow Clones and Rasengan, but those are both very versatile techniques that can be used in a lot of creative ways + he has his Nine-Tails transformations

Same with Sasuke and his Sharingan abilities and Lightning Style jutsu

Sakura just punches shit really hard

It’s fine in 2 cases:
1. Extreme speed and agility allowing them to avoid being hit and to try and strike at weak points using piercing weapons or special hax tools etc.
2. In a supernatural-type setting where most of the fighting power comes from the power system, not the body, ie HxH. Although you will run into the same problem with it LOOKING goofy if you regularly have these little waifs pounding the shit out of bricks.

Sakura’s power big power upgrade was trash. “Super strong” just isn’t impressive in Naruto. She could have been loaded with medical nin drugs, enhancement seals, etc, to give herself various temporary boosts and abilities allowing her to hang in a variety of high-end fights. But all she got was Sasori, and even then it was with the puppet-granny boosting her.

You know, 20 years ago I was hoping Sakura would blossom (pun intended) into an actual utility combatant, who could chain genjutsu, some taijutsu, and some ninjutsu successively because she was touted to have great chakra control. Like a jack-of-all-trades, master of none kind of character. She could learn a bit from Lee, from Kakashi, and from some of the other characters she met throughout the series. Maybe use scrolls too, for weapons or jutsus for elements she isn't great at using.
I thought it would be neat to have one member of team 7 who could probably burn through all of her chakra in 5ish minutes, but could also be the most unpredictable and potentially lethal among all 3 for that short span of time, kind of like Kakashi, but actually using different jutsus and methods rather than Sharingan + Chidori.

What happened instead is that she became a Tsunade knock-off, Sasuke ultimately got the part for being fast and lethal, and Naruto got everything and more than he bargained for with a shitty sequel installment.
