I doubt it, kind of defeats the purpose of having a bracket there from the start for us to speculate on. But it's possible the author's changed his mind on things, and just about any twist can be justified by "Nobunaga thought it would be funny".
Personally I'd agree with people calling it a hack move but also wouldn't be mad if it gave Kotaro and Choko a chance to both live longer.

So far the sideplot has been kept in check so the story might not get too derailed.

Musashi has no qualms with killing and Kotaro seems like the type to refuse any kind of mercy and keep fighting until killed. Plus Nobunaga probably wouldn't allow an obvious survival. I think she has a decent shot of living now that more people have been surviving, but I think it'll be more of an accident.
