I just finished this manga and I'm curious what /a/ thinks about it. I don't think I need to waste too much time talking about what a mess it is, so I'll just say at the end of it all I liked it, I wanted to like it more but it is what it is. Probably my biggest issue is personally being totally unable to give a fuck about the protagonist(s). You spend so much time not focused on Takanayagi or Nagi, which isn't a huge issue on paper, but some of their emotional moments (especially fucking Takanayagi) fell flat for me. Fortunately Mitsuomi is fucking cool and may as well count as a protagonist so I thought he had a lot of great moments, especially that final fight.

I also obviously only read the manga, but I do wanna ask if anybody has any idea why this manga/anime became so totally forgotten? I don't know how well the anime did but I feel like if I watched it as an impressionable teen I would have thought it was the coolest thing ever. Seems like it had the perfect level of sleaze and action that should have let it at least carve out some kind of niche in anime culture. I'm also just assuming the anime stops before it gets totally pants on head retarded which is definitely one thing that could have killed it if it happened.
Also yeah, OhGre draws some amazing women, but that goes without saying.

Also I'm going to sleep and fully expect this thread to die, so I'll also just mention that Bunshichi was 1000% my favorite side character.

It was well liked in the 2000's.
Was one of these really cool mangas with radical new artwork that emerged during these years, I remember it fondly because was one of the firsts mangas during the first years of scanlation that everyone liked.
I was a big fan and really invested in it, Ogure has a messy way of storytelling that progress very episodically, very much like pulp novels, he compensates this with his incredible artwork. He very much said in one interview that he was really invested into the story but that his editors pressured him to end it given Air Gear was doing better in sales.
All that being said I was really invested into Tenjo Tenge I have fond memories of it, for me is a 10/10.

Do you have any idea who did the coloring for TenTen? I read the digital omnibus release and man any colored pages (volume covers, character art at the start of volumes, colored pages at the start of volumes) all had absolutely gorgeous coloring. Loved how vibrant they always looked and how every pallet was pretty unique but still always looked good. It was a super weird thing to notice because like 99% of the time other manga do similar colored pages they are nowhere near as awesome.

It was good but the overly long flashback arc completely killed the pacing, made me forget about our actual main story and character, was generally a slog that outstayed its welcome, and by our return to the main story, I dropped the manga.

Ogure probably has a set of assistants that help him, but he was a hentai artist first and I saw colored pages with similar technique so is probably him plus unnamed assistant-san.
Search for Silky Whip, that is a collection of his hentai artworks, that have really good stories too.

Nobody will like this answer but Akira Hiramoto’s stuff is as close as I’ve seen something get, tonally at least not execution wise. Super Ball Girls reminded me a ton of Gantz (gratuitous nudity combined with really violent gote sometimes) but I never finished Gantz and Super Ball Girls is such a fucking nightmare.

But for the most part you’re right, when battles harems died I think this kind of combination of fanservice and action died alongside it.

Thinking about it something else that's kind of really fucking weird about the flashback arc is that it doesn't even change the atmosphere or feel of the manga at all? Like I feel like the manga could have just started with the flashback arc and literally nothing would change, maybe it would have gone over better if anything since it wouldn't be such an insane brake check.

Because there was not one good scene in this series. Here's the thing, I can give you multiple examples right now of memorable spreads from this series. They're easy posts in OPTs, they're good enough to be murals. Some of Oh Great's finest penmanship.
But there's not on single scene in this series I can give you. Nothing I can point to and say "check this out"

I think is just a thing of getting how he narrates things, he does massive info dumps followed by non sequitur action scenes, then he sets the pace and storyline in subsequent chapters. You definitely need to read two to three times his works to get to understand his pacing. I enjoyed Kaijin Fugeki a lot, the first two chapters where a fun mess and then everything starts falling into place.

I enjoyed the wild ride. Like many people said he may not be the best writter out there but I like and find it funny how his stories start as a shonen manga and then suddenly turn into some psychological metaphysics nonsense. Air Gear was also like that.
Oh! Great characters are just too cool and are always top fashion looking.
Tenjo tenge is also fun to see how his art evolved from old school style to a more modern realistic style.

It says a lot that after the successful Air Gear storyline when it came time to do the same thing for Tenjho Tenge interest instantly died. TT suffers from having an identity crisis throughout most of its run mainly due to OG! not being able to shake off his ero artist quirks in the beginning and it eventually evolves into a convoluted mess and not in a fun way like Air Gear.

I'll say from my end I give it a...maaaaybe? recommendation? If you don't care about fanservice that definitely takes away some of the point, but I think Tenjo Tenge still had really well conveyed fights and action. Characters are kind of weak though, but I still think there are enough good ones to have a good time (Bunshichi, Shin, Mitsuomi, and Madoka are all great). If you can get through the flashback arc then you'll probably be able to at least kind of enjoy the rest, flaws and all.

I only watched the anime. Went with the expectation of getting into one of those nostalgic battle ecchi shows from the 2000s like Ikkitousen, but that long flashback about Maya's brother overstayed its welcome so much it killed the show for me.
