Shinkai's words after watching 5 Centimeters per Second's live action adaptation:

That was unheard of and it made him a legend right from the start. The "new Miyazaki" narrative came later when he gained a recognizable style and started producing movies at a constant rapid pace, early 2010s really. So shut the fuck up.

5cm/s was such an awful movie that I swore off on watching any Shinkai movie from thereon.

He's remade Your Name twice now? And Your Name is more or less just a maturation of his 'One Who Got Away'-itis. So he's really made two movies. 5 cm/s is good for baby's first experience about growing up, but once you actually grow up its pretty weak. (I say this as someone who used to consider it his favorite anime movie, and now after rewatches just sees so many issues with it or how surface level it really is.)
