Shinkai's words after watching 5 Centimeters per Second's live action adaptation:
>When I started watching the film, I felt somewhat uncomfortable at first. I felt as if I had passed an incomplete and immature baton to the young filmmakers. However, from the middle of the film, I began to be engulfed by the images, and by the end, to my own surprise, I was crying as I watched it. I was not sure if I was crying because of the elements of the original work, because of the work done by director Okuyama's team, or because of the lost 2000s, but at any rate, I was strongly moved by the film.
>Once again, “5 Centimeters per Second” is a strange story. There is no great dramaturgy, no heart-pounding action, no heroes or villains, everyone is hurt and injured for no reason, and something is always unsatisfying. But 20 years ago, that “nothingness” was who we were and how we lived our lives, and we wanted to make an animated film that would scoop it up. I am not sure if the animated version reached that goal, but the live-action film is a wonderful fruition of the clumsy seeds of that time, with a hint of greenness. I truly felt (almost for the first time) that it was a good thing that I had made 5 Centimeters per Second. Thank you so much to everyone in the Okuyama group.

5cm/s is a retarded story and he's a retard for making it s movie. All he does is product bittersweet slop with lots of feet shots. Nigger has almost 0 good movies under his belt despite being in the industry for 20 years. After Suzume I have a small iota of hope that he may one day make something considered "good" rather than just "barely watchable" or "pure slop".

I hate that zoomeroids now think it's cool to hate Shinkai. He's the OG, self made man who created a great little work from scratch in his basement. And now he's treated by zoomies as some kind of a corporate drone just because he's popular

That's too late, retard. Hoshi no Koe came out in 2002 and nobody was calling him Miyazaki. He was just a crazy guy who made a great anime basically all alone. That was unheard of and it made him a legend right from the start. The "new Miyazaki" narrative came later when he gained a recognizable style and started producing movies at a constant rapid pace, early 2010s really. So shut the fuck up.

Is that so bad? Jim Jarmusch makes the same film over and over again and everyone thinks that's great. David Lynch could only make 1 type of movie well, all attempts to do something else resulted in slop. All the good Scorsese films are the same. That's kind of how "authors" are.

There is no shortage of filmmakers that finance their first indie film, they don't just get critical pass for the rest of their careers. shinkai isn't any different

This might be the most retarded thing I've read to date. His shitt 2002 ova only put him in the eyes of a few big names. At that time it wasn't considered a critical success or even good by any means. It was only once he started his movie career in 2004 that he was put on the map and then further slingshotted into the limelight with 5cm and Garden. The reality is he's a hack who remakes the same garbage film repeatedly and zoomer fanboys like you eat it the fuck up because you thought this genderbend tranime was the best thing ever written.

People pointing out that he has rehashed the same movie his entire career is not "burning hatred." also this assumption that its all gen z hate makes no sense cause you tend to skew older to have watched an entire directors filmogrpahy to make this type of criticism. If anything Gen z is more likely to be impressed by his work as on average they have only seen few of his movies so they haven't caught on to his schtik

Because Gen Z started with Your Name. He's actually extremely popular among them because they consider that movie a masterpiece for whatever reason. Most older people I know really dislike him for Garden of Words especially because it was more or less the last chance they were giving him to produce something good.

No, I mean assuming someone you disagree with is of a certain age group and imputing certain unfavorable characteristics to an ENTIRE age group (like not sourcing citations even though that has fuck all to do with what generation you are) is a sign of derangement.

He's remade Your Name twice now? And Your Name is more or less just a maturation of his 'One Who Got Away'-itis. So he's really made two movies. 5 cm/s is good for baby's first experience about growing up, but once you actually grow up its pretty weak. (I say this as someone who used to consider it his favorite anime movie, and now after rewatches just sees so many issues with it or how surface level it really is.)
