Compare it to all of Dragonball, not just Z. It starts off as a series about a regular guy dragged into the supernatural world and takes a few arcs to become an action series.

Last arc started fun and was largely unfinished with blurbs telling you the outcome then there were a bunch of disjointed vignettes and then it just fuckin ended with zero fanfare

I still think chapter black was the most fun season/arc. The development towards the end was weird but the revelation of A and S class demons and the sense that they were really fucked if they failed to stop Sensui made me on the edge of my seat during the first watch of season 3.

It doesn't. Nothing compares to Dragon Ball. It was pretty good before Togashi suddenly got tired of it though.

This shit was terrible

There's a lot of things about YYH that I like better than DBZ, but it just consistently fails to stick the landing. Almost every arc ends in a whimper. Even the Dark Tournament doesn't have that big, memorable finish you expect from a climactic final battle.

I get why it's like that. The emotional payoff happened the moment the Three Kings stopped acting like backstabbing Jews and agreed to fight it out because that's how a real demon is SUPPOSED to act, dammit. Everything after that was just a formality. But it could have ended in a more satisfying way if Yusuke had a more proactive goal throughout the arc. I dunno, maybe he doesn't meet his father at the very start, but knows he's gonna be in the tournament somewhere and he wants to cross fists to get the answers he's looking for. Something like that. Yusuke doesn't have much reason to be there.

I actually think that's the reason the last arc is able to end like it did honestly. It wrapped up the end abruptly but then you realize "oh, actually, this is fine, as it wasn't Yusuke's fight to begin with".
Not that I'm a fan of the last arc for other reasons.

Dark Tournament is one of the best anime arcs of all time, better than any single DBZ arc. The following and preceding arcs are decent and the last is insanely mediocre. I really liked the third arc but felt like it was full of proto HxH subversion that ends up taking away the fights that made Dark Tournament so amazing,

As someone who watched YYH entirely only few years ago for the first time and owns all 42 volumes of DB.
I'd argue that YYH has better bigger arc at its ocre but Dragonball manages to be consistently good from start to finish.
Obviously the tone is very different you get with YYH, something I really like, trademark to Togashi given it continues in HxH as well.

Not really. The last arc is unfinished and had to be cobbled together from the author's notes because he got put out of commission from years of golem posture. The anime takes the ideas of the last arc and works them into an actual storyline with a satisfying conclusion.
