I haven't watched this series yet, but I read how the remakes are universally hated by fans. Is there really no reason to watch it?

The dislike was aimed at the very different art style of the New Thesis version more than anything else.

The remake isn't bad, the original is just way better.

The new art makes them all look like cut-and-paste fujo bait rather than human beings. Otherwise it's fine. The prefer the original.

It feels like the remake just stopped after the jew arc. Are they going to continue?

I didn't hate it.
t: loved the original ova and been reading the books.

To make a comparison, the art is more modern, pacing is faster (yet sometimes it somehow feels slower than in original, it kinda changes scene to scene).
Some battles are different in their execution (batttle of Amlitzar, fortress vs fortress duel ending, Castrop incident).
Tons of minor details in different scenes are different, which I'm okay with, it's interesting to see how stuff happens in a different adaptation.

Finally on a personal note, I just find it interesting how Castrop incident has been different in every iteration I have seen it so far.
>In book, Castrop gets ambushed in an asteroid field by Kircheis and his retainers kill him while he flees the battle
>In original OVA, he gets caesared after his defense satellites get blown up by Kircheis party gas
>In DNT, his fleet faces Kircheis fleet, Kircheis passes a speech check and Castrop's troops turn on him

Let's just say that the OVA expands on a lot of things, has a unique art style (both for costumes and characters and architecture and ships and so on), a timeless score often consisting of orchestral stuff, and tries its best to adapt the novels chronologically instead of just doing a straight adaptation. This means it's longer, it has more attention to detail, it has more staying power, lesser characters get more focus and so on.
The OVA pretty much only lacks in animation quality since it's a late 80s - late 90s anime trying to make do with essentially mail-in money. It was also created out of passion if I recall, the guy who directed it basically begged the author for the right to do an adaptation.

It's pretty funny that when all is said and done, this will probably take as long if not longer than the original OVA to actually finish. Wasn't the last installment like 3 years ago now?

The other night I was having a dream about my old apartment, and when I woke up my brain said "it'd be different if Kircheis were there." Not sure why, but I felt a painful nostalgia.

I felt like Reinhard and Kircheis were the worst off, the others weren't as bad. It's pretty stark the difference between young and older characters though, way too obvious they hired separate designers for them.

I don't hate it, it's just disappointing and the character designs are bad. It feels kind of pointless because it's not really bringing anything new to the table, other than a more modern artstyle.

The remake's marketing is being closer to the novels but it isn't at fucking all.
What their differences is in reality is primarily
>original
Attempts to cover almost everything
>remake
Cuts cuts cuts to try to focus more on the main characters or main events

The problem with the remake is the source material. What LoGH has going for it in spades is scope but the characters are all (deliberately I might add) archetypal. So there's nothing really to be gained by trying to focus in on them any deeper than the original already did. While the original will sometimes gloss events so quickly and shallowly they loose a lot of their meaning or even coherence.
In the end the original adaptation was made by a guy who understood what the books were all about. The remake is bad conceptually. The original is bad digressively.

I liked it. It being closer to the books lets you see what's changed and sometimes appreciate the changes
Also I very much liked seeing the characters I love so much again
