It is absolute, pure kino overall. In many ways its darker and more harsh. Hermes for example is near psychopathic, it is a motorbike after all. It only cares about who will ride it. The other characters that are introduced, like Kino's master and the dude with the sword are great contrasts to Kino. Kino wants to continue her journey, the dude wants to find a country to live in. Kino tries to find ways around conflict, the dude thinks that all they're good for is murder. You're doing yourself a great disservice if you don't at least try reading it. Many of the stories pop into my head in daily occurrences.
I like how as a writer they don't focus on creating a dilemma; they think that a good story creates an interesting dilemma by itself. I love that viewpoint, and i think they're right. Frankly, its so good that i've put off reading it for a year now since i dont want it to end. A journey does imply an end, after all.
