Manga only guy here who just finished reading the Dragon Ball z manga for the first time.
I thought Dragon Ball super was a midquel but it seems to be a companion novel to a movie or 2??
I don't understand why chapter 2 would drop me in the middle of Bulma's Birthday with this cat guy mad about pudding with text telling me to watch a movie to see what happened, why not draw what happens?
And whats this about a Golden Frieza? Is that the same movie they told me to watch in chapter 2 or is that another movie?

And is Vegeta acting weird here? I swear he wasn't so ....lovey about his wife in the Dragon Ball manga?

I'd say no, I cancelled my order of volume 2 after getting annoyed with vol 1, but I did made this thread wanting to be convinced of it being "totally worth it to buy the blu-rays of the movies to get caught up Anon".
I'm happy enough to end my reading at the end of regular Dragon Ball

Dragonball Super was a weird mess of a TV show, movies and a manga that all told kind of the same story in different ways and all kinda expected you to fill in some blanks from the other versions. Aside from the first movie, it's also mostly garbage made to milk a finished series and sell new Gokus with differently colored hair to retards.

Also, "the Dragonball Z manga" is just an early burger rebranding of vol 17-42 of the Dragonball manga, not a sequel or a separate series meant to be its own thing.

I didn't have to even think about that Dragon Ball vs Dragon Ball Z stuff because I read those red 3-1 where they dropped the Z out of of the title.
It clearly was one story even if it was a bit more funny in the first few volumes, but Super instantly was fucky feeling to me.

Yeah, Super is basically the rightsholders saying they're going to do more Dragonball either with or without Toriyama, and Toriyama being so annoyed at how shit the Hollywood movie was that he agrees to writing the plot even though he didn't want to commit to doing full scripts. So you get both a manga and an anime that individually interpret his plot outlines in somewhat different ways.

Don't consider Super as canon, it's just the ramblings of a senile old man drawn by some hack fraud, nothing more, nothing less... DB ended in 1995 and that's that.
