Except that completely makes no sense given Yamcha's character in Dragon Ball as it seems you clearly didn't watch it, but you watched Z and bought future Bulma's word on Yamcha being unfaithful when really for anyone with any sense will realize Bulma is a unreliable narrator who likely told her son that because she was too at the time of their break-up emotionally immature as we even see this highlighted back then on her being irrational when Yamcha had fangirls who wanted to see him as he has no control over that and if she had waited and listened to what Yamcha was about to say about her despite all of her faults he was about to say he still loves her when both Puar and Oolong were on his side on Bulma being unfair to him (in fact for the latter basically he had Bulma pegged on being too insecure). Bulma's too proud to admit she's wrong.

Let's be real the only reason Bulma ended up with Vegeta was because of the latter's popularity when he was suppose to stay dead and he had to pair him up with someone to make for a redemption but also given Trunks being part saiyan as if it had been Yamcha's son it just wouldn't have made sense for power scaling for the android threat.

Toriyama making Yamcha out as a player makes no sense with context established and given his fear of women which only started to go down by being with Bulma. If anything, the only reason why Yamcha would have been going to date multiple women was only after the breakup to fill the void given his first love broke his heart.

Was he ever a “serious” character? He was just as silly and jobbed as much as any other character. The most embarrassing thing to happen to him was bulma breaking up with him for vegeta. He mostly just got less screen time as it went on.

He was absolutely taken seriously, he just had the misfortune of being the very first major rival character in the series, so he kept being used as a benchmark to show how threatening other characters were and never really got any impressive wins himself.
