Tezuka's assistants say he once drew 150 pages in 10 days. Is this the most impressive record of output in manga history?

It's definitely impressive but you also have to consider his style being very simplified as contributing to such an output. Also I'm pretty sure that there are a non-zero amount of pages in his library that he didn't draw for at all. I read a line about this in a volume of the English Yoshiharu Tsuge complete works (think it was Nejishiki), going on about how mangaka like Tezuka and Mizuki had a clear "house style" which led assistants to sometimes have complete control over pages and sequences, in part contributing to those massive body of work.

Never thought about that desu. Regardless, it's fucking insane how prolific the dude was. I honestly wanna read some of his manga sometime

He had a bigass studios with who knows how many assistants and a simplistic art style. Many mangaka still does everything on their own and draw the most detailed shit ever put on paper on a monthly/bi-monthly schedule. Those are the real insane people.

there is more thought and work put into these two pages than some of the most prolific modern series have in entire volumes and you could say this about any random handful of tezuka pages.

I'm sure the simpler art style is part of it. Were all of Tezuka's series drawn at that pace? Phoenix was released over quite a long time, but even for each individual part, was Tezuka releasing it weekly? Or even some of his other stuff outside of his earlier stuff like Astro Boy.

I might have overstepped in my claims, not sure about Tezuka but here are pages indicating that Mizuki's friend and assistant Tsuge was sometimes responsible for layouts, visual direction, pencils, and inks, with the exception of the main character's rendering.
The Drawn and Quarterly Tsuge collections are great reads, not just for the manga, but also for the essays which are included giving background on the stories and the artist's life during each period.

It's actually very approachable, as long as you're not one to quibble over "old" artsyles. Did you know the Osamu Tezuka Complete works is 400 volumes long? And even then it's not actually totally inclusive... (source: https://tezukainenglish.com/wp/?page_id=443)
They had some volumes of Black Jack at my highschool and I've been Tezuka-pilled ever since.

Did they draw 'names' for manga back then?
That seems like a huge time sink nowadays.

I could probably draw 150 pages in 10 days. They would just suck absolute balls.

Something similar also went for a series like Golgo 13, where Saito would do general rough layouts, usually, and would leave basically everything to his studio afterwards, typically only doing important faces at the end.
Dialog being handled by some combo of himself and the editorial team at the company.

I wonder if there's a way to chart when that studio system of manga creation stopped being common for successful authors.
You'd think that there'd be more money floating around for creators today, than 60 years ago.

Tezuka's art style was pretty simple
Most mangaka with insane output weren't drawing anything crazy detailed. Even then they were still overworking the shit out of themselves for sure. Tezuka and Yokoyama didn't even bother coming up with new character designs most of the time they just repurposed ones they were already used to drawing.

As far as I've heard the process hasn't changed drastically. If it's true that mangaka leave less work to their assistants nowadays, the main reasons are probably that audiences care more about stylistic consistency and that more complex artstyles are harder to imitate. I've still seen manga from the last few years where it was obvious an assistant got to draw the face of a non-background character.

Most don't hold up if you aren't putting yourself in the shoes of a Japanese kid in the 50s.
His adult stuff is pretty noir-inspired. But I tend to find that means it's formulaic and once you get the vibe you can guess the plot from early on.
You might stir some shit up posting the Princess Knight, though.
Could be fun.

Really the issue is one of direction.
Tezuka's paneling and storytelling is too quick for people these days. Most popular series today are super decompressed and will spend an entire page just depicting one expression or a few lines of dialog.
Back in Tezuka's day, you couldn't do that. So everything is played out extremely fast and only rarely is decompression utilized. This makes the dramatic stuff hit a lot less strongly today than it probably once did.

modern mangaka barely draw anything in the frame that isn't the characters(s), they insert irl photos or use 3D renders in clip studio, the simplicity is also a smooth-brained excuse from retards.

What's with the name calling? Can't refute me properly? If you love the old generation so much, all the power to you, but don't discredit the people still working hard out there wholesale over some exposition pages just because One Piece and Demon Slayer, as shit as they are, represent the commercial success of the industry presently. If you're such a deep, long time appreciator of the medium, you should know better than pointing to surface level dregs for the normalfag mass to suck off Tezuka like a manchild. Your statement is on the same level as shonenspics flinging shit in their interseries fanbase war.

To shine a light on lesser known manga series. Sort of like how a movie viewing club has little or no worth in giving you a deep appreciation of the medium if all the members screen are Marvel movies. Storytime something weird and underground, for fuck's sake, not Bleach.

Tezuka, Shotaro, and Nagai were extremely workaholic. Nagai's workload eventually decreased. Tezuka used to even work in parties or trains(when he made Crime and Punishment). He also can draw perfect circles without the need for any equipment. I firmly believe that his art style was his choice rather than what he really can do. Shotaro made 770 manga, while Tezuka made around 700. They worked themselves to death. If you're interested in the subject, then check out Frederik L Schodt's books and the documentary named Osamu Tezuka: Secrets of Creation.

Sure, and the 'old greats' like Mizuki just used processed photos or tracings to fill his backgrounds too.

Redditors love to reference Tezuka to prove that anime and manga has always been a communist or socialist artform, even if they've never actually read him.
He's just a talking point about how 'real manga' is communist and all anime/manga fans that aren't commies too, are outsiders and they're the insiders.
