Why is Tomino considered one of the great anime directors? His animes were always low-quality compared to his contemporaries.

In terms of animation? Sure. In terms of script, storytelling, themes, interconnectedness, scope: no. Turn A Gundam is as good as anything those directors ever made.

I've seen Gundamfags try to talk down Ideon, while it was the one thing where he had the most creative freedom.

Because Gundam was very influential. (This means it sold a lot of toys and military nerds liked the made up war scenarios and backstory that only get mentioned in magazines)

Turn A has awful worldbuilding dude.
Literally the only reason people praise it that highly is that it's got Yoko Kanno and it's niche enough so you can get away with praising it. Same situation as Ideon. The tv series is dogshit but you can call it good because odds are the 5 people who actually watched it aren't in the thread to call you out on it.

Tomino wasn't a golden child working with the best talent available and all the freedom he could ask for. He was stuck producing cheap toy commercials with IP holders breathing down his neck, but still managed to make the best out of those situations, ending up having more cultural influence than all of those other guys combined.

And it shows. Cast of complete non-characters, cringe melodrama and laughable death scenes ramped up, not a single memorable scene or visual, lolwtf moments in even the first episode, character and mecha designs look shit and regressive after Gundam, even more repetitive and poorly paced. It's complete shit compared to 0079.

He did it to himself. He had the chance for a more ordinary career but preferred being a toy maker' bitch, and then lowered himself even further by whoring out his IP into a franchise. But hey at least he could be a big fish in that pathetic pond. He'd already been buckbroken outside of mecha by Miyazaki and Dezaki redrawing his storyboards after all.
>Actually, three days before they approached me about Zambot 3, I'd accepted the job of chief director on an anime based on a preexisting original work. But when I was asked to direct Zambot, I turned the other one down. In the end, I thought I'd benefit from a situation where I could write an original story and develop my own skills.

Tomino is a better storyteller than rest of these combined. His visual direction might not be on par compared to the rest of them, but as screenwritter he is the strongest one by far. His characters are not just mere mouthpieces, archetypes or "characters" - they're real people hidden behind the animation.

Because he made dozens of classics while his contemporaries made shit like Cutie Honey and Steamboy?

/a/'s archive suggests this mostly applies to the other popular directors. Their filmographies are a mystery to most of their fans, while Tomino is very well studied on 4chan. Even a schizo such as yourself has watched Tomino but can't be assed to watch all of Miyazaki.
