So many stories get to this kind of situation and just stop at "killing is... le bad". Parasyte actually takes a step further and says "you're just a human being, and you owe it to yourself to prioritize the safety of you and your people".

I take it like Shinichi recognizes he's being asked for a values judgment, and his mind isn't made up about how right humans are or that having natural predators would be worse than runaway industry. But he can take one step down and it's just the correct thing to do as an animal trying to live.

This sequence is great. The way he second guesses his naivete, the tears he cries when making his decision, that one page shot of his hair flipping back like his previous hairstyle but his human hand being the one to carry out the murder with a human-made weapon. What a way to tie up all the themes and Shinichi's journey. Beautifully done.

One of my favourite scene in manga and executed so well. Not unnecessarily brutal, nor preachy, nor cynical, nor condescending
A highschool boy who has the humanity to feel sorry for an animal that was about to kill him, because he was raised in comfort by loving parents. After a brief internal dialogue, he ultimately commits to killing his would-be killer, because he's human after all.
It's all so consistent and fitting

Such a good scene.
All of Shinichi's turmoil over whether he's a human or an animal.
And in the end, he makes an animal decision to finish off a predator, while feeling human remorse for it.
It was never one or the other, but both.
Anonymous No.281368424 [Report] >>281380508
I just watched Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (the 1978 one) and it's opening scene reminded me a lot of the opening scene of parasyte, with weird alien spores landing in a city. Makes me wonder if that film was an influence. Some ideas like the parasites assuming their hosts identities and cooperating with each other behind the scenes to further their own agenda felt very similar.
Anonymous No.281368669 [Report] >>281369099

>So probably over 200 kills total
Quite a comparatively small kill-count for a final villain in the end. Which isn't a bad thing at all, one of my favorite parts of Parasyte's last act is how small scale it all is. Even though the raid arc establishes Gotou as a massive threat, the subsequent arc to deal with him isn't some grand battle but a quiet struggle in the deep woods. It doesn't make Gotou any less threatening however, if anything only adding to the tension since it's undoubtable that he'd go onto kill thousands if left unchecked. The perfect setting for building Shinichi's decision to go after and eventually off Gotou with his own hand(s).

>>281368669
Fortunately for everyone he preferred to act like a wild animal. He could've become an international serial killer, stealing identities and killing countless people over the course of several decades.
The world's lucky he wasn't all that smart. I know 200 is just a ballpark number here but there are some actual animals infamous for having kill counts way higher than that.

He didn't want to kill, he wanted to fight. He'd be short lived because he's too strong to keep a low profile while indulging in his combative nature, sooner or later he'd pick a fight with someone who'd be too much for him. Had Shinichi not killed him here he'd have gone on a final rampage and gotten glassed after killing a lot of people.

I think so, yeah. I think she alluded to the fact that they will always be parasites - forced to live off of a host. Completely dependent on the survival of another animal's body.

>>281346999
Or, it's about them being driven by their instincts to a further degree than humans (at least initially, since migi and reiko arguably started to overcome that). Humans are also driven by instincts and emotions, but we can overcome them by reasoning and will. This sets us apart from all (?) other animals.

As a member of a peaceful society in which the only violence he dealt with directly was school scuffles I can see why he'd have a hard time coming to grips with it. At this point in the story he's coming to see parasites are more than just monsters but a sibling species to humans in a sense. There's a separation but also enough proximity to see their deaths more akin to murder than extermination. I think that's what's going through his mind here, and that's the meaning of his reluctance to kill know that his view of parasites is different. Still, he goes through with it because of what you say.

Can parasites manage that level of mimicry? They're so malleable that they don't usually need to bother with the intricacies of internal structure, but there might be a limit to how precise they can be throughout their whole body. Even if the disguise can fool an X-ray Shinichi should be careful to stay away from fire and doctors trying to take medical measurements from that arm such as his pulse or blood.

Feel like the worst part of living in Parasyte-verse wouldn't be the fully realized parasites themselves but the fucking worms. Imagine having to go to bed every night knowing that something the size of a bug could slip into your room, go into your ear and eat your brain. And even if you catch them while you're awake the little shits can still try to bore directly through your skin like Migi and Jaw did. Plus if pic related is anything to go by, the process is painful enough to wake someone up from a deep sleep and have them writhe in agony for a few seconds before being consumed. The cherry on top would be knowing that as your life slips away, you're gonna be replaced by a doppelganger that will proceed to kill everyone in your house the next morning. (Assuming you know what parasites are beforehand.) Is it ever confirmed whether all the parasites came solely from a single wave of spores, or if Earth is just gonna get periodically bombarded by those things? I know Migi mentioned that your chances of dying would still be lower than a traffic accident, but it still feels like an utter nightmare scenario to me.

Not confirmed, but all of the parasites who appear seem to be around the same age judging by their development, so it's implied there haven't been any new waves since that day. The first wave itself might have happened over more than 24 hours however, since this guy's and Shinichi's transformation happened during the night while Jaw found Uda during the daytime.

If we take the Korean series as canon, considering the ending features an adult Shinichi at the end after South Korea's own first experience with the parasites, I think you might be able to call it the second wave. Maybe it's an alternate continuity but in that one Shinichi is an adult with a job and there's a visual emphasis on his hand so we can assume that he's got Migi on him. If this was SK's first experience and we want to fit it into the original story's continuity then the only explanation is that the original Parasyte happened as usual in Japan and The Grey followed up in Korea in 2024. I personally like this idea, although if it were the case one should have expected more mentions to the Japanese precedent.

The irony is that this is pretty much the way all our other predators went. Actively avoiding humans and only ever resorting to man-eating in times of desperation. Any individuals that behaved otherwise were naturally weeded out by the selective pressure of a bullet. In that sense, Shinichi isn't off with his remark that the parasites are earthlings like us. The spores likely never came from space but instead came to be on Earth itself.

As much as I don't like Migi hibernating, I've always felt this chapter handled it very well. Migi getting a glimpse of the world as bright as it is through human eyes, a last subconscious effort by Shinichi to show him how much is left for him to see, only for Migi to still close off into what seems like a dark and lifeless existence, to ruminate on an experience that only a Parasite could've had and even then an exceptional one amongst their species. It's great, and serves well to highlight the ultimate difference in species.

The fact that it's also directly tied into Reiko's experiments, and the greater way that her and Migi act as foils to each other, pushes it even further. Like there's always been a bit of a nature vs nurture thing among them, rather that Migi was only helpful because he lacked the nature, which then helped Reiko get the experiences that overcame her own, so for her to then inadvertently give him one of the most unique and Parasite-exclusive experiences ever--ironically inspired from his own neutered-Parasite existence--is just, unf. Layers on layers on layers on layers.

Since Goto is a collective and serves a symbol for them in the story generally, it makes sense that he could only be killed when both Migi and Shinichi saw him as one of their own. Humans gathered their weapons and banded together for the cause of killing the enemies of their species in the city council building. Goto murdered them all because he was more unified, his weapons stronger, his purpose more clear to him than the soldiers were as a group. As an external enemy he was unbeatable. He could only be killed by disunity. Pollution is self-destruction on a broad scale, it's a symbol of humans being at odds with the whole of humanity and nature. More literally Migi, who he had thought to be part of himself, cut up his insides and then broke his connection to the other parasites who comprised him. Shinichi dealt the finishing blow once he saw Goto as another living being like himself, opposed but still part of the same whole. The theme is everywhere in the scene, even Shinichi and Migi are internally conflicted lol

The choice to draw all the decorative symbols on it isn't meaningless either. Though hey, animals can appreciate art in their own ways. It's just the same problem: Though there are points of connectivity and even overlapping feelings, the world looks different to them, and hell it looks different even to members of your own species. True understanding just isn't possible.

This is why it always bothers me when something gets criticized for being unplanned. There is nothing inherently wrong with a writer changing his mind along the way, it can and often does improve the story. The only thing that matters is whether the end product is a cohesive whole.

Speaking of retcons, a possible one I caught was the change in Shinichi's eyes.
The first time its mentioned is before Migi uses his cells to save Shinichi. But it seemed like that was the cause for the change in Shinichi.
I wonder if the author initially meant for the merge to happen "naturally" but then changed it to a unique Shinichi thing before introducing Uda.

Maybe, I think it was alluded to that their coexistence might have been altering their brain chemistry. Although in the end Shinichi's changes were more related to him being depressed and traumatized.
Anonymous No.281403061 [Report]
>>281402367
Possibly. The way I read it the impromptu heart surgery accelerated a process that was already happening. Ryoko noticed the change far before it affected Shinichi's personality or physical abilities. Normally it might've taken decades for that many of Migi's cells to spread throughout Shinichi's body. Over time Jaw's cells will probably make Uda marginally stronger and calmer. Given how unfit and weepy he is the changes will just bring him closer to the average male baseline though kek

I think that he was dissolussioned with the parasites when he first encountered them. He noticed they were different but realized they were just doing the same thing as him. On the other hand, Shinichi was something else, both human and monster. I think he was seeking some sort of validation or understanding, and when parasites were a dudb he went after Shinichi hoping to find an answer, only for Murano to reaffirm Shinichi's humanity and declare Uragami an outlier unable to fit with humans, parasites or even Shinichi. Very cool. thank you to both posters for posting. this was my first time reading this. really enjoyed it.
i was interested to read that he felt his choice in killing Goto was influenced by a sense of contrarianism.
i think he really handled that well. we talk alot about how lame the mc of more recent works going "but i dont want to kill the [obviously clear and present immediate threat to all that we hold dear]" can be.
in Parasyte i really liked how he portrayed this.
it really is a tragedy that such an awesome creature needs to be killed. but the need is still there. and getting all high and mighty and disconnected from nature to pass cold judgement over the creatures of the world is simply not a luxury that Shinichi has.

It was alright
I wish instead of the narrator exposition in >>281373675 and >>281373692 we got to see direct reactions from random parasyte civilians to the massacre and show them deciding to turn a leaf and adapt to human life. They disappear completely as characters after Goto's death
Also the last-minute environmental lesson felt really tacked on. If they didn't emphasize so much on the pollution and trucks dumping garbage part then it wouldn't feel so out of place, but I guess that's just the author trying to show another part of humanity's influence which is still the core theme of the series
Anonymous No.281408406 [Report] >>281408520 >>281424611

but i guess i also want to say that here there can also be an unnecessary simplification, where we revel in the simplicity of "it is right to uphold or responsibility to ourselves and those around us", and sort of miss the reason its a moral dilema in the first place.
there is a dangerous tendency to feel righteous in our wrathful judgements. to feel justified in enacting violence. its probably why we see those knock-off "to catch a predator" retards who go out looking for retards to brutalize in the name of protecting hypothetical 17 year olds that they have invented. they are driving this interaction from the wrong direction
Goto really, really wants to stay alive. he wants t just as badly as you do. viscerally and with literally every fiber of his being. it is a genuine loss to kill him

but Shinichi knows this. and also knows that he cannot allow him to survive.
when faced with two tragedies, he actually explores what he wants, why he even cares. and comes to the decision that i think is clearly justified (as an argument) through the narrative of the book. he doesnt take shortcuts, and i think that really lends to how satisfying the decision is

27 chapters is not that much, you could read them on your own in a couple of days and then hop in. That's what I did with these Parasyte threads

Thanks so much to both OPs, this has been a great storytime. I had already re-read this manga earlier this year but couldn't help read it again. Its been great reading other anons interpretations of the messages and philosophies too alongside, so thanks to all other anons too. If there are any anons who haven't already, check out Parasyte The Grey on Netflix, its a Korean spin off with some good action and story

Final thoughts before the thread dies, I always found it interesting how Shinichi manages to keep his identity a secret all the way through to the end of the story. Very few people ever find out, and with the exception of Uda, those who do tend to die. In fact Shinichi doesn't really have many reliable allies at all throughout the manga. Usually stories like these find the protagonist gathering a group of competent allies who they can face the worlds secret conflict with together. But Shinichi, for the most part, only ever has Migi to rely on. That single difference really gives the manga a whole other tone, especially during scenes like when Shinichi has to stand guard against his mothers killer at the hospital his father is in because nobody else can do that job for him. Or when Shinichi breaks down after Gotou tells him he'll be coming for him at some point, since there is quite literally nobody in the world he can go to for help against this massively overpowered enemy. There's no power rangers squad of other people infected by failed parasites whom he can work with to beat Gotou with the power of friendship. It all comes together to create a crushing, isolating feeling, like Shinichi himself is a wild animal that has to fend for itself in a forest of predators. The safety net of sociality human beings take for granted is no longer present in the story. Migi is the sole shining light that uplifts him from this environment, which is why it hits so much harder when he leaves Shinichi in the final chapters.

i was thinking the same, it keeps you on your toes if shinichi's lack of emotions is due to trauma or if it's migi changing him. he has no human he can be himself with, not even his gf
Anonymous No.281423579 [Report]
I thought the dad would show up again towards the end, but the last time he had any relevance in the story was when Shinichi asked him not to return to the house.

Yeah, from thr start it's made clear that Shinichi and Migi's existence is aberrant to both humans and parasites. Anyone who discovers it will try to kill them both, that's why they both avoid revealing it to anyone. Their main problem is that parasites can detect each other so while they can hide from people not so from Migi's kind. It does add to a sense of deep isolation and need for cooperation and understanding between such different people as they both are to each other.

Thanks to both OPs! What a ride. Before we reach bump limit I thought I'd share this bit from the end of the last volume of the tokyopop release. It's a feature on the then-planned live action movie adaptation. It was in development hell for years before the license ran out and a Japanese studio picked it up and released the two part adaptation. Thank god it turned out that way because they were definitely brewing a train wreck...

I dontknow how well this sort of stuff is documented so thought I'd at least share with other anons for this story time.

I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the very prestigious award for my work "Historie".

As an assistant by nature, the "work" is like my child and my master. The "work" is not a person, so I feel as if I am accepting the award on its behalf.

I have been an assistant to my master "Historie" for a long time, but due to age-related decline and other factors, my original slow writing has become even slower, and unfortunately, I am currently not working on the serialization in the magazine. However, I have recently found that I can compensate for various inadequacies (especially physical and stamina) to a certain extent by switching to tablet drawing. This has given me stronger hope for the completion of the story. We are not yet in a state where we can say "please look forward to it," but we will continue to move forward as is.

Once again, I would like to thank everyone who has read "Historie," everyone who is looking forward to the continuation of the story, everyone who cooperated in the creation of this work, and the teachers at the manga school who carefully taught my 64-year-old self digital techniques.

The new english editions of Parasyte are coming out in december, apparently with an updated translation taken from the full colour editions. nice that they're using the original japanese cover art this time round. looks like it might be a condensed release though, so some will inevitably get unused unfortunately.

Thank god the Hollywood burgers lost interest and got their greasy grubby mitts off of it. Takashi Yamazaki's version was not perfect but a hell of a sight better than whatever they were brewing. Although, would have been curious to see how the Jim Henson's Creature Shop spin on the Parasytes' design would look like.

I assume that this translation is most likely the most correct one but I will always be fond of the odd twist in this old fan translation. The whole thought process went more like
>"what am I saying?"
>"killing him... isn't my choice to make?"
>"I am not that weak"
This more recent translation is more poetic and less angry which fits Shinichi better I guess, but I will always remember the raw strength behind the concept of a character thinking "I am not that weak" when hesitating to deal the killing blow to a downed enemy.
