What's funnier is that One Piece back then had this reputation of being the thinking man's shounen, at least compared to the other big 3 and DBZ and saint seiya etc.

The fanbase was actually pretty insecure about it and constantly tried to find ways to differentiate OP from the other "retarded" shounen with things like power levels not mattering, emotions being more important than action, Luffy not being whiny, the amazing totally planned out since day 1 world-building etc. it was a whole thing, you can check out old Arlongpark threads to see it when it was happening.

And now, more than 15 years later, the bulk of the One Piece fanbase is brown teenagers talking about "upscales" "aura" "agendas" etc.

It's ironic and almost sad in a way
