I still don't get how this got so popular back then, my brother told me that everyone were dancing hare hare yukai and cosplaying as them, like it came out of nowhere and suddenly everybody was talking about it.

Things that people who only saw the anime don't know: Haruhi and Kyon are gods. That happens in the novel: she is Chaos and he is Order.
And the worst thing is that the other 3 knew it and didn't say anything. In the novel, incredible things happen because of that revelation. If you watch the first volume and the first chapter, they were very obvious and nobody noticed, as much as Suzumiya and Kyon wanted the existence of time travelers, aliens, and people with special powers. That's why it is granted in a perfect way. If only Haruhi had asked for it, it would have been a disaster like the other things. Kyon balanced it out. That's why at the end of the second season, the distrust between the other 3 members is shown.
As he said, Kyon being in the brigade was never a coincidence. The meeting of Haruhi and Kyon is impossible to stop unless they stop being gods who are destined to be together, as Nagato did, a world without their god powers.

Everything about it was just completely unique and different at the time. The mixed up broadcasting order, Kyon and Haruhi's dynamic, the high quality dance, the pacing, etc. I can't really remember all the details, but I remember thinking it was fresh. It hit all the right notes. You can psychoanalyze each scene and probably come up with something interesting.

This is literally never established at any point in the LNs, the most we get is that Kyon seems to be the key behind granting a person Haruhis powers, as the anti-SoS brigade seems to believe so, but other than that there is not a single point in the LNs where any of the characters think Kyon is a God like Haruhi, and at no point is it ever established that the other 3 members were always aware of this, and literally only Koizumi ever suggests that Haruhi might be a God as a crackpot theory of his, and it is literally never a plotpoint how the 3 members lied to Kyon.

Stop spreading misinformation about how the most popular fan theory (Kyon is God) is totally revealed to be completely true in the LNs, and how the other 3 totally knew this whole time but just never said anything.

you don't get it because you've been constantly bombarded with internet and anime culture since you were born, much of which happened as a result of shows like haruhi exploding onto the scene when they did

none of that shit existed anywhere near mainstream or even in terms of general knowledge in the west before then, anime was a truly niche hobby for weird nerds (not even normal nerds) in the west

if you asked a random person to name an "anime" in the 90s or early 00s, they either would have said "pokemon" or "spirited away" or maybe "dragon ball" and that's fucking it

Dunno what you're trying to get at. Azumanga was obviously popular but is a 4-koma gag manga. School Rumble was a romance/comedy series, not slice of life or one of those series where, say, Harima joins the literature club and learns about old authors.

Side note: School Rumble is great and would be giga-popular if Tenma was removed.

this was back when unless you had a computer that could handle downloads for anime and you knew where to get them where a virus wouldnt be given to you, or knew someone that was deep into otaku culture to recommend obscure stuff, you were watching the same shows as everyone else because streaming services weren't a thing yet and all you had were Youtube vids in 3 parts, or a block on toonami/adult swim if you were lucky enough.

Its not that Haruhi was this masterpiece, its that the community at the time came together with help from anime like it, lucky star, FMA, etc. It was era defining. Kind of like cowboy bebop.
Anonymous No.281479955 [Report]
>>281479708
No. It's because the series was creative in its execution; people weren't into reading LNs in those days, so most fans weren't familiar with the source material leading to a lot of discussion and speculation; and in the pre-social media era when people weren't bombarded by new content every 10 seconds, people actually had time to properly discuss the series.

>unless you had a computer that could handle downloads
You weren't there. Fansubs weren't released like games where you needed a cutting edge PC to play them. The question was whether you had the literal bandwidth/good enough connection to download episodes then. Though you're right in a way. This did mean people had to be picky about what they downloaded because it did take more time in those days. (And plenty of people weren't willing to go into IRC chat rooms to try and download stuff)
