If nothing else, this series really proved that Dragon Ball's main quality was never "ADOOBENTCHA" like so many OG puristfags keep insisting it was, and the big fight scenes have always been the franchise's strongest selling point.

I didn't watch a single episode of that crap. Some idiots told me they thought Arinsu would replace Towa, and I just kek'ed and said the bitch looks like Jimmy Neutron.
Toriyama was only so good and amazing because of the pressure his editors/supervisiors put him under.

whenever posers say OGDB was full of "adventure" they're always forgetting the fact that it had FOUR tournament arcs (and Muscle Tower is also a gauntlet as a bonus)

Dragon Ball is not about the fights. The reason the fights are so good is because people are invested in the characters, and the build-up to said fights.

It's not the fights and transformations themselves that made Dragon Ball popular, it's everything surrounding them.

Toriyama is a comedy writer. That's his strength. Serious stories are not his strong point.

Dragon Ball has been reduced to a shallow caricature of its former self. Up to the end of the Cell saga, Dragon Ball has always had meaningful, solid writing and storytelling which made the most well known aspects of the series (flashy transformations and power-ups, beautiful epic battles, big energy blasts, etc.) feel like a genuinely earned climactic payoff for the story that had been building up prior.

But with recent installments in Super and now Daima, all of that storytelling, buildup, and characterization has been sacrificed in the name of making these big fanservicey moments that have none of the weight found in the scenes they call back to. Nearly the entirety of Super is full of unexplained and unearned transformations and arcs that don’t connect to each other, and Daima fell into that same pit.

In the last few episodes of Daima, a long time but noncanon fan-favorite transformation was made canon, but the way Goku achieves it is a sorcerer granting him the power to do it randomly. It was never foreshadowed or alluded to, it just happens purely for the sake of fanservice. Super Saiyan 4’s introduction in Daima is straight up shameful compared to how Super Saiyan was carefully layered across the Namek saga, and how Gohan’s hidden potential ultimately culminated in Super Saiyan 2. What makes it worse is that roughly the first third of Daima was creating an actually good plot with interesting antagonists and characters, but all of that was dropped over the course of the show, and by the finale, it was reduced to meaningless fighting nonsense that serves no purpose other than to look pretty and make kids yell at their screen.

No series becomes popular for a different reason than what the author intended

The philosophy of the fights is what people find appealing, even though 87IQ Mexicans aren't consciously able to articulate it. It's a series about the virtues of brotherhood, self-improvement, and doing what's right. The Hero's Journey without any ambiguities, just like a classic morality tale.

The problem is not that it was mainly about an adventure, it's that its adventure was nothing like OG or even GT. What made the adventure bits worthwhile was the comedy aspect, and more often than we realize that revolved around dirty jokes. GT didn't have it as much, but it was sometimes there. Daima had nothing, because nowadays that stuff is "too problematic" for wider audiences.

>Toriyama is a comedy writer. That's his strength. Serious stories are not his strong point.
Then why was Dragon Ball so successful? Also, you say that like Toriyama has ever written a serious story outside of Dragon Ball.

DB and DBZ are still the closest entries in tone and writing

The dirty jokes were the worst part of OGDB. The only time it was ever funny was that chapter/episode where Bulma spent the entire time walking through town in a bunny suit.

It pisses me off that Goku never got naked and showed his uncensored dick and ass like he did in the original Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball GT and Dr Slump
that was a running gag for little Goku, removing it is like making a Gash Bell remake and not allowing Gash to get naked

Nah it is pretty funny that Bulma doesnt realize she has no panties on, and there is a build up that Roshi will ask to see them to help Goku, only for the perverted old man to get a full view, more than he bargained for, but in a good way.
