Lee was very powerful, but not meant to win. He kind of accomplishes two things though, in the greater scope of things:
>He reminds the characters that only coasting on talent and gifts only gets you so far. He may have definitively lost his fight to Gaara, but he rattled the very idea that Gaara was completely untouchable. Before that, he styles on Sasuke a bit too.
>He becomes a preview of what Gai can do, after he becomes irrelevant but Gai gets to occasionally do something.
