I just didn't find it funny and confusing as an anime only but kept giving it a try because the animation is amazing. Episode 5 is a must watch before dropping the show at least.

People are going to (probably rightfully) shit on this post, but imo a big part of the lack of hype is due to it not being on CR.
I think despite hating CR, a lot of people just figure that if they'd have to pay for a VPN anyway. they might as well just instead sub to CR and deal with whatever crap they get served.

I'm enjoying it. Its structure is kind of annoying though. It needed more episodes and less abbreviating of the adapted content. Prior to the anime getting there I expected at least 2 episodes for each of the story arcs. But we got one episode for 2 of them (the tower and the race) and like 5 minutes for the other one.

Most probably were or are at least in spirit.
But a big percentage are just lazy and I think it reflects that in the catalogue.
It would be really interesting to see some actual data wrt to posts and generals that are on CR vs ones that are not, and if there is any sort of trend.

The problem is that is the bootleg version of a beloved series, people will only ever remember it as "not as good as the original" even if it's kind of good on its own.

I thought you were talking about the anime compared to the anime but no, I think you're saying City compared to Nichijou. As if this is the only time a mangaka has made a new series similar to their old one. The fact that it has completely new characters and a new setting is enough to set it apart even if the humor is similar. If you like something by a mangaka then a normal person would hope for something similar. Especially when the mangaka's works don't revolve around some central plot.

It's the AOTY. I don't know what other people's problems are, but I also don't really care. I'm anime-only though. Seems as an adaptation it is pretty bad, and maybe some manga weirdos are upset about that.

Yeah, but if you have a static IP there are sites where people can track what you download(i think just searching 'i know what you download'' gets you an example).
Even if there's no consequences for anime in particular, it can be awkward depending on what you download to have it listed there.
Also if you're already downloading anime, there's probably other things you might want to download from time to time. So it's nice to have a VPN.

It's just forced popularity at that point, people can enjoy a thing without having to come onto /a/ and loudly tell everyone they're enjoying a thing daily and religiously

We had threads every day for the first 8 weeks, then I got tired of making new ones only for you (yes, I know it's you) complaining that there was a thread every day when a new episode wasn't coming out that day. I assume the other thread makers also got tired of it.

I watched the first episode the day it aired, enjoyed it but it didn't stick with me and I didn't watch it as it aired subsequent weeks. This week I finally watched eps 2-10 and now I really love it, I love almost all the characters and some of the gags got audible chuckles out of me.
Like Nichijou it had a kinda weak and uninteresting first episode (ep 0 in the case of Nichijou) that's not really representative of the remainder of the show. It's also a show that by design takes a few episodes to warm up to and properly get to know all characters so that you can fully appreciate their interactions.
Also the Tekaridake segments are kino but are going to fly over most people's heads.
