I remember thinking Ergo Proxy made sense when I watched it but I've forgotten everything that happened so no I cannot back up this claim with anything.

The ending of EOE makes perfect sense if you pay attention. It's not even subtle about what's going on, it's just portrayed in an abstract way.

Most of those have endings very easy to understand though. What's difficult to understand about Sonny Boy's ending just for example?

The ending is super rushed but the message is an incredibly simple and straightforward one.

Because anons are dense and/or think they're too smart for the show.

In that sense Lain's ending isn't actually that complicated either, it's just all the other spaghetti that got thrown on the wall in the previous episodes that make it hard to pin down what you just watched

B-but Egg-no-Tamago made no sense at all, not only the ending...
And Sonny Boy's ending made sense, unlike the rest of it which didn't...

The pointless Umezz reference? The fucking quirks? THE MONKEYS? The hot teacher thing going nowhere? Up-side-down mine? Pajeet feller and his research? The crystal/stone disease? Dog guy? Nah man, stop trying to gaslight me.

I don't think Umineko's ending makes no sense. When a story deals with themes like truth, perception, and human relationships and builds that through constantly shifting perspectives and layered storytelling, it’s only natural that the ending feels complex or difficult to grasp at first.

The ambiguity in the VN was an intentional technique, meant to make you reason your way through the lies and perspectives to reach your own understanding of the truth. It’s part of the experience.

And besides, the manga version of Episode 8 gives us a clear and conclusive resolution. It directly confirms the culprit’s identity, motive, and psychological background. That shows the entire narrative was always coherent within a consistent internal logic. The VN just wanted you to work for that realization, while the manga lays it out plainly.

I've always said that the manga is just a dumbed down version of the same story.

Deep doesn’t always mean esoteric/creative and Deep doesn’t always exclude simple stories. Disney’s Fantasia is esoteric without being deep, and many really simple stories include hard hitting deep elements. That being said, if a story is good enough to pull off being esoteric then it is highly likely to be deep because the undefined nature of it adds a lot to chew on.
