My understanding is that the only reason SEGA even sponsored the anime is because a few people at their offices were fans of the manga and suggested doing so.

The volume extras make it abundantly clear that the author just genuinely loves SEGA, the history of retro video games, and Yu Yu Hakushō. There's a ton of authentic passion that goes well beyond anything you'd expect out of a man's that exists for no other purpose than to shill hardware and abandonware from the 90's.
