Anon, School Ghost Stories was basically Japanese Goosebumps. The books were REALLY fucking popular with elementary school kids in Japan in the 90s. It had four live action movies and two or three live action TV series. Hell, the anime consistently had ratings in the 10-12% range when it aired. (that's similar to the viewership Detective Conan got when it was at the peak of its popularity)
You just don't hear about it much nowadays because the people nostalgic for it in Japan don't have much reason to bring it up often beyond "hey, remember that?" Same reason, for example, there are a good chunk of people in the west who were big fans of, say, Beverly Cleary growing up, but it's like, how often does The Mouse and the Motorcycle really come up in conversation?
