horror anime
Does actually scary horror anime exist? Not gory or unintentionally funny, but actually chilling and disturbing. Most that I have seen are kinda bad
Anonymous No.283447099 [Report]
Yes.

I don't want to be that guy be horror isn't scary. It's creepy and unnerving but it isn't scary. I don't know why people think good horror has to make them shit their pants

Sigh, you might be right anon. Maybe horror just isn't scary

The only time I've ever been "scared" by media is when it makes me confront my own insecurities

Fatalistic horror is retarded and forced

Absolutely, but they aren't tagged as 'horror' and their main gimmick isn't having zombies or ghouls.

It may not have been scary but I still think of that scene every time I see an umbrella with a metal spike tip.

The best horror in anime usually comes in small-medium doses from non-horror series
Anime can be very good at body horror

>Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
This is a classic that I'm sure everyone has already seen, but in the first season it really draws you into an atmosphere of fear and confusion because you don't know why people are disappearing.
>Dark Gathering
This is a very good anime, but more because it knows how to combine moments of terror with humor. It didn't scare me at all, but it was a lot of fun. Although some people say that certain parts scared them.
I think that only the part where a girl loses her body and is permanently kidnapped by a dead person is a bit sad.

>Itou Junji: Collection
This is a selection of some short stories by Junji Ito. Some are comical and others are horror stories, a little disturbing, although they look better in manga form since the black and white helps give the stories a darker feel, while in the anime they are in color and the effect is lost a little.
>AMON: Devilman Mokushiroku
I saw this Devilman OVA 20 years ago, and it's one of the few anime that surprised me when I saw it. I didn't expect it to be like that. I found the 2018 Netflix series very mild in comparison. I haven't seen it again, and maybe it was just my age. But it's one of the few anime I would describe as cruel. You should check it out. Nowadays, no one has the guts to make an anime like that.
And one I have pending is Violence Jack by the same author, Go Nagai.

This isn't scary or creepy. But it made me feel as if I had been struck in the spirit.
After finishing it, I was left with a feeling of unease, like hopelessness. It brought me down and lasted for a few weeks. Something that has never happened to me with any other anime.

It's hard for anime to be scary in the way a live action movie is because the medium being drawings makes it too far removed from reality to really scare anyone except small children.
>>283447109
It doesn't *have to* be scary, but when people ask these questions they are clearly referring to the pants-shitting variety. There is plenty of horror anime that's about vampires, demons, zombies, etc but none of it is going to keep you up at night after watching it.

I've yet to see a good execution of supernatural/monster type horror in the anime medium, but I've seen some good thriller type ones. The first episodes of Higurashi are a good example.

There is horror in anime, even if there isn't really horror anime. Before you call me pretentious, hold up! You should watch anything by Hiroshi Harada. The guy is a genuine basement dwelling schizo. He's fucking crazy. He unironically believes Trump is poisoning the water in Japan and making the fish turn into killer mutants. Watch some of his shit. It's an amazing glimpse into a deranged mind.

Death's Lullaby about a gap-toothed kid and his sick mother. He gets bullied for his retard teeth so hard that the kids knock him unconscious every time he tries to visit his mother at the hospital. This makes his mother think he hates her and doesn't want to see her anymore so she kills herself. Gap tooth kid murders his bullies in revenge but then America nukes Japan a third and final time.

Shota gets tired of being cucked so he tries to kill some of her yakuza customers, they stab the shit out of him instead and he bleeds out. Sexy uggo girl dies from Super AIDS.

Adding to this, Ujicha is also a good horror "anime" guy. I don't know much about him. I was only able to watch Violence Voyager, trying to find Burning Buddha Man now. Violence Voyager is fucking awesome.

Yeah, the first episodes of Higurashi were actually a lot more scarier than I would've guessed.

No
proper horror almost doesn't exist in animation. At most you can get jumpscares, gross out horror, existential horror or unnerving imagery
but something that makes you actually "scared" is almost impossible.

Who are you trying to impress on the internet kid?
Anonymous No.283452164 [Report]
Dark Gathering spooked me a couple times, but that was a couple episodes in a 26 episode run so you have to be drawn into it for other reasons.
