If you don’t support authors by buying physical manga, blu-rays, or merch, then you’re part of the problem.

Nips don't care about overseas sales. If you want to support a series you have to import shit new using a proxy shipping service.

Why don't the authors just make a patreon?

I’m whatever on random merch unless it truly sparks an interest. Too much useless crap lying around otherwise. But I do love to collect manga

I’ve always wondered about this. Surely it wouldn’t hurt to have the supplemental income

Do the creators even get a lot from the western releases? It's not that I don't want to support people but these must go through so many hands if they see anything it's got to be really trivial.

They actively make it as difficult as possible for foreigners to buy their stuff. They do not want you to buy it. Why are you going against their wishes?

No. Anime and manga are free media that exist in the internet cloud for free. The whole reason why they got globally popular in the first place is because they are easy to find, upload, stream and share. And they should stay like this.
I go to the cinema to see Chainsawman and sometimes re-read chapters on mangaplus, but I haven't paid for an anime media otherwise since 2015, and never will.
I pay rent for my room, my internet, my electricity and heat, my insurances and thousand other things, plus taxes. I own nothing but I WILL be happy - by watching cartoons for free until the day I die.

The publishers might not care much, but the money sometimes matter to smaller mangaka. Although it's not guaranteed they actually know where the money comes from.

As far as I know, the percentage they get is fine, but I think people might overestimate how many copies the average series sells in the west.
