The "harem" terminology is actually born out of our misconception of the story in front of us: every one of these shows is a romantic comedy plain amd simple, yet we call it "harem" because most girls are aiming for the same MC one way of the other
And as in any romantic confrontation, there really can't, or best to say SHOULDN'T be an agreement between the players: one girl wants to date, kiss and hold hands with MC-kun, the rest of them hussies should fuck off.
That's why the latest tendency so prevalent in these last years in romcoms of girls respecting each other wishes, encouraging each other to a fair romantic competition and "do your best to win his heart and i will do the same" seems like BULLSHIT to me. Of course, sounds good in theory but in reality it simply won't work, and it feels like a cheap plot development to keep a manga going for 5 years when it could have ended in one, and with a lot less tears and pain (and actually more laughs from the romantic battle hijinks involved)

on one hand my dream harem would be reading one where there is complexity between all the girls in a harem, especially between the girls and their struggle to be the one the mc will stay with, relationship blocs, they would have temporary alliances and what's not, but there is an understanding between all the girls that only ONE will win.
bakarina as an isekai was the only one that sorta came close to it (barely but it was something), mainly because it had Mary manuevering and having plans upon plans to get herself closer to katarina.
Hell the opposite could work too, all the girls agree to share but there is an hierarchy about who is at the top and even still competition, the only agreement being they all want the mc's dick well being.
but yeah no mangaka or LN author can write a proper harem to save their lives and instead devolve into "fair play bs" so many times, or just go "and they all got along and agree to share, no problem" mangakas should just not try that at all and lean harder on romantic battles where one girl wins, the rest gets fucked (not literally kek)

A harem should be held together by the effort of the man, there can be some willing to share but most should only tolerate it because the man is special, he is able to do the right things, say the right words, ect, to keep these women who don't want to have to share him content with the status quo.

Of course, then they would have to make an actual main character that could believably earn and keep the harem together instead of a blank slate self insert that smiled at a girl once so she is willing to sacrifice everything to join a sexless harem for the rest of her life. it's easier to just to that instead.
