I know the theme of the chapter was Iko conquering her fears, like her going to a high place, and dealing with Kimura, so she tacks on the confession at the end, but it doesn't really have a punch romantically. Feels more important for Iko's character, than an actual romantic confession. I prefer her confession after her song, but that was already in a similar vein to this one after exposing her inner secrets to him. I guess the writer wanted an additional punch to this confession.

I for one don't expect this to blow up with the anime that would lead to more milking. WSM adaptations rarely get gigantic boosts if the source material prior sold like crap. You don't even see any glimpse of the anime staff going all out for Mayonaka, be it VA, animation quality and whatnot. It just fills a seasonal slot for them.

50ish chapters feel kind of rushed, but only regarding fullfilling their dreams. I'm afraid the solution regarding that already got the flashforward treatment, so what else really? Arisu can't help with shit regarding Rikka and her band. Arisu is already in the VA school with Nene. She just need to finish the school and have an important debut role. She had her flashforward. Iko will have 3 million subs somehow and again, Arisu can't help with shit anymore. Shinobu is whatever, she already voiced her concerns that her path is post-graduation stuff unlike the others, so she got glued to the Nene stuff.

But how can you drag the romance aspect after recent events? You could argue he really believes Nene hates him or dislikes him, but the rest were openly gunning for his attention. Got kissed, got mind games, got confessed to. He operates with the mindset the girls are in love with him and he keeps proven right. Banning romance activites didn't help at all.

She's served as a pretty strong influence on Arisu's character in recent chapters, but that's about it. The only scene in the entire manga besides the very on the nose hints that all of the heroines get by default (she sounds like Apollo when she's angry; she likes the same filling in her onigiri) that Nene has going for her is pic related. You can make a cogent argument that Nene is saying that she began to hate Arisu because him reciprocating her confession somehow blew up her spot and forced her to end Midnight Heart Tune, thereby destroying their safe space. That's strengthened by the fact that she hesitates ("...") with he defaults to the assumption that she's referring to him barging his way into their club, as if she's playing off of his response rather than asserting truthfully that she's pissed that he ruined their relationship through no fault of his own (which would be in character for her.)

The problem with that is that it necessitates headcanon theorizing to justify her reasoning. Why would Arisu reciprocating her feelings cause her to end the broadcast? Or more accurately, why would she be forced to do so? Did her dad overhear? Her brother we haven't met? We know she absolutely despises men at the beginning of the manga. So it wouldn't be TOTALLY far-fetched that the moment one of her listeners professed their love for her that she would be forced to end MHT by the men in her family, and that she would project that resentment into Arisu. Cue the ambivalence - her perpetual state of both loving and hating Arisu, the dickhead who ruined her radio show by reciprocating her feelings (again, actually in character for Nene to be this unreasonable). And when he forces his way back into her life and into her new, no-boys-allowed safe space, what's the first thing she hears? That this absolute tool has been going around asking every girl he meets to tell him she loves him. "Fuck this guy," she thinks... (Character limit.)

Nene could be Apollo. It could happen. You can write it. You can make it work. But to suggest that it's LIKELY, given everything we've been presented with in the narrative, is an extreme stretch, that requires headcanon and minimizing established elements of her character (e.g, she's a terrible fucking liar). All the while you have to bank on being able to convey all of this within a couple of chapters to make the reveal work, while praying to whatever shinto god inhabits the local shrine that your reader base doesn't get furious with the red herrings you've built up so thoroughly proving to be exactly that.

This is still a four house race, even if Nene is running on a broken leg. Her working feels impossible because her being Apollo is seemingly impossible. But being the winning heroine in this manga is not contingent on being Apollo. Both the chapter 5 overture and Arisu's desire to retract his confession to Apollo were almost certainly written into the story so that Igarashi will have retroactive justification to let any heroine win, even if she's not the one he intends to be Apollo. It could be because he changed his mind on the winner, or because he wanted leeway to let a heroine win if she ended up way more popular then the others (the Mafuyu Kurisu effect). Having that out that affords him the ability to say, "Arisu never intended to marry Apollo just because she was his first love. See? He wanted to take back the confession. And doesn't this bit at the end of chapter 5 make it clear that Apollo was only telling him the whole story after he already moved on from her? She even calls him Yamabuki-kun!"

I don't think Nene has lost yet, though I'm certainly not betting on her. But I'll be thrilled if either she or Iko take the win. I love them both.

That's not what I was referring to. Shinobu wasn't optimistic about her career prospects, but she never gave up on them the way Apollo is suggested to have. She was even willing to pursue them at the expense of her club activities and relationship with her friends. Until last week, the only heroine who had verifiably given up on pursuing her professional ambitions was Rikka.

Iko works for an entirely different reason. She may have been musing over possible career paths during idle conversation - something that Arisu obviously took much more seriously than she did. While she was playing at what she saw as fantasy, he was locked the fuck in to support her no matter what voice-related career path she chose. If (and it is very much an if) Iko is Apollo, it absolutely tracks that she might have gotten cold feet and run away from Arisu with her reciprocated her feelings. It jibes with her character that the boy she likes, who's giving it his all to see her succeed, telling her she loves her would cause her to turn tail and run. Because while she was treating her future as a flight of fancy, he was all-in, even though she couldn't bring herself to admit that she'd already abandoned her actual dream of being an idol.

I don't think it's a disqualifier for Iko at all. She's a genuinely strong candidate.

Apollo told him she didn't know what she wanted to do yet but Iko went from Idol to vtuber. And while Iko had this moment where she saw the vtubers world for the first time and found a new career she'd love to pursue - she seemed to really like what she saw - Apollo reason to become a vtuber was "because they could grow bigger in the future" and lacked emotional attachment while Vtubers helped Iko in a big way even if she wasn't as serious as she's now.
Apollo reason for running away was because she failed to make their dream of becoming pro real, and it could track for Iko if she hadn't bounced back from Idol to vtuber in only a month, but she found a new career to motivate her.

Except she didn't. It wasn't motivation, nor was it why she bounced back.
