Late 90s/early 2000s dark psychological/supernatural anime
Let's have a thread for one of anime's more stylistically and thematically interesting periods, particularly the steady stream of bleak, atmospheric, often experimental psychological/supernatural/sci-fi anime that came out in this era. Is there a name for this style/movement? It's not quite noir, even though the influence is obvious.

We can't even fucking have general anime discussion threads about genres or periods on /a/ anymore because unless the OP is about a specific anime it gets called a fucking recc thread.

The "general" in ""general anime discussion threads" doesn't have the same meaning as "general in a "General thread" you retarded ESL. Stop pretending to be a backseat janitor.

Not every thread needs to be about a specific show. People are allowed to talk about aesthetics, genres, styles, periods and trends.
Go derail another thread.

This period has a name, it's called post-evangelion. Doesn't matter if you hate it, use shit already labeled.

Can it really be called post-Evangelion if this kind of anime arguably started with Key the Metal Idol, which predates Evangelion by a few months?

But this is my thread, and it isn't bait, besides you people showing up and wanting to fucking derail and argue a discussion thread.

It's not even a recommendation thread because I've probably watched everything that will or could eventually be posted.

This was actually supposed to be a fucking serious thread because I've been going through this stuff during seasons where there's not a lot of interesting anime to watch and I have more time to go through my backlog.
If this were a recommendation thread I'd have asked for recommendations. If this were a bait thread I would have asked "why don't they make anime like this anymore?" or some stupid shit.

This is why we can't have good things on /a/ anymore.
Saging this dumpsterfire of a thread unfortunately.

The only other thread in the catalog like this is a cheap bait thread and not even about the same thing I want to discuss in the OP
Truthfully I made this this thread because I just stumbled across Sci-Fi Harry, somehow an anime that completely fucking slipped under my radar that I've never seen mentioned, not even in old /a/ charts, just when I felt like I've exhausted almost everything in this 90s/2000s psycholigical anime period. And I figured that if I just made a Sci-Fi Harry thread it'd get 3 replies at max.

I don't know, probably? Admittedly I'm only halfway through episode 2 and picked it up literally an hour before making this thread. It's very much in the realm of "weird sci-fi", closest thing I can really compare it to is Boogiepop.

Bad comparison, if memory serves me right, that anime is episodic, unfinished episodic OVAs don't seem very appealing to be honest.

That's another reason why I made this thread about the general psychological/supernatural anime trend of the late 90s and early 2000s my man, I'm down to discuss other things from the same period.

This genuinely isn't a bait thread and I'm not sure how to convince you otherwise, the thread immediately derailed right away because of shitposting and shitflinging.

There's nothing wrong with the OP. Just because someone else is making bait threads doesn't mean we can't have serious discussions about a period of anime in another thread

Boogiepop has a fun atmosphere, I'm always on the lookout for more stuff like it. Watched Ima, Soko ni Iru Boku a few months ago and hated the story all the way through but stuck around for the pretty art. The plot and the resolution was so bleak that in the end I was wishing they scrapped the whole idea and focused on the few occasional bits of mechs and grimy industrial buildings instead.

Really cool setting, I wanted to see more of that wasteland and its strange creatures. But watching the emperor act like a gay baby and Abelia putting up with his shit when she could've stopped 99% of the events of the story at any point took the immersion out of me. Just didn't make sense.

I dunno how to describe it but that sort of run down industrial landscape with orange sunset triggers this weird nostalgic feeling, sometimes I get it when I'm driving in the evening through warehouse/factory areas in my city. Sorta depressing and peaceful at the same time.

Hamdo is a retard but he's an entertaining retard. He wasn't some brilliant military tyrant, he was an insane pathetic man trying to rule over the scraps of a long dead dead world.
Anonymous No.283717474 [Report] >>283717526
>>283717275
It's Abelia that confused me the most. Her behavior is the most villainous of the cast. Hamdo was the village idiot but she both commanded the troops and essentially was the brains of the operation. At any point in time she could've wrested control but instead she followed him off the cliff into the most obvious downfall imaginable. Worse yet, I'm pretty sure after the collapse she ends up being forgiven for all of it too.
Anonymous No.283717526 [Report]
>>283717474
You could say the same thing about the soldiers not revolting. Everything on the Hellywood was running purely on routine. Shu was the element (literally) from another time that finally shook things up and brought about change. But yeah Abelia being forgiven was odd.
