These large-scale action chapters are perfect for binge-reading and the anime adaptation of Part 2. We also needed large-scale destruction to evoke a tangible sense of the apocalypse unfolding. Yoru and Pochita just beating each other in front of a Japanese school building couldn't evoke the feeling of a major calamity taking place.

This chapter was amazing and shows that Fujimoto is willing to draw escalations on a grand scale, something that was desperately needed and he's been avoiding for a while. I'm actually happily surprised by the direction of the latest chapter.

I’m a little conflicted but her death feels like textbook fridging. Fridging is “female characters facing disproportionate harm, such as death, maiming, or assault, to serve as plot devices to motivate male characters”

Nayuta didn’t have a character arc or even a story arc centered around her. She was a likable character but it feels like we’re not as connected to her as power or Aki.

It’s not like power really had a huge character arc or even and arc focused on her but she felt more involved in the story than nayuta. I think power appears in more chapters and we see her character with denji more often. Her ending with denji in the dumpster was a great moment.

Her final moments with denji are tragic and the crowd attacking her is heartbreaking but I just wish we got more from her character. It’s not even like “I miss her character” it’s that I think she needed to be in the story more

Anyway: Nayuta’s death is an important part of the story, because it forces Denji and the audience to confront the visceral reality of what being Chainsaw Man is to him. We already saw Denji choose being Chainsaw Man over the idea of normal life at the end of Part 1, and we spent all of early Part 2 seeing how this was a negative thing for his development. The Church arc brings this to fruition, where when confronted between the two choices, Denji waffles and initially chooses Nayuta. But when push comes to shove, he chooses to pull the ripcord and tells her to get out of his way. Because instead of trying to run and protect Nayuta, Denji would rather kill the other Hybrids and tear himself apart in the process - and he tells Nayuta just as much. Nayuta gets lynched by the mob because she needs to take care of Denji, since Denji would rather engage in violent escapism and self-destruction than actually have her in his life.

It’s why the prison break arc afterwards is so important: when Denji has a bunch of people who are all willing to help him find Nayuta, he lets himself get led around and chooses to instead try and get laid or eat good food instead of looking for her. Denji continuously shows that when the choice is up to him, he won’t choose normal life (as represented by Nayuta) instead of getting to indulge in his baser desires and hedonism that being Chainsaw Man represents. So yeah, Nayuta’s death was a well-written part of the story, and a crucial element to understand Denji degeneration as a character.
