I'm trying to read Dire Contingency and I don't know if I can do it. I thought I was approaching a buildup to the third act and I looked at the scroll bar and it wasn't even at the quarter mark. Whoever said it's like an overwritten lamer version of Rask Rebellion probably nailed it, with a dash of Le Resistance which is so worn out and boring in 2025.
I will say I dunno why Ruza is acting so weird throughout, a lot of his issues were resolved at the end or after AW yet he acts more standoffish and antisocial then he did in AW.

TK anon here, just started reading Autumn War. The prologue was really good. Without spoiling much, it plucked the heart strings in a few scenes & only fermented my hatred for the bugs.

I really like Xipa & I can't help but to feel saddened whenever the story shifts to a whole separate play. I was somewhat surprised that it took awhile to get back into Xipa's POV. I can't help but feel that most of his stories may do that (switching POVs). That being said, I was pleased to find returning characters.

Not quite xeno but, there was a novel called "Light on Shattered Water" or something like that involving a dude who got warped to a land of cat-people. He was an architect or graphic designer IIRC, and his only real advantage was that he had a laptop with a bunch of movies and an encyclopedia; and he was clever enough to figure out how to ask for help by eavesdropping on a classroom and learning the phrase "Please help me."

I'm generally fine with any kind of protag so long as there's believable logic to how he ingratiates himself into a xeno society enough to bang a female.

That said, I'd much rather see group dynamics among xeno stories, instead of just having the whole narrative rely on one single human. Something like Deep Space Nine, where humans and aliens with various viewpoints having to get along for the sake of a mission or goal. Sure, there's banging but also deeper themes and ideas bouncing around in the narrative. My favorite xeno stories involve reluctant or even racist humans or xenos who eventually grow bonds between each other or just those cultural/biological misunderstandings.

For example; if a xeno-species experiences heat, it makes sense to have them bang a human but after they feel used and abused because it's barely consensual but now the human is chasing said xeno trying to establish a real relationship. Human finds out that xeno's courtship is complicated and very intense, requiring extreme devotion. Eventually proves himself.

That kind of story feels more real to me.

First one's a little simple becuase he said it was a proof of concept for the Kodiak tanks that snek never thought of. It's cool that my favorite races, Valbarans and Jarilans, have an easy excuse to basically be anywhere at this point. The Borealans can stay trapped in their shitty action move scenes. I wish we had more stories focusing on Jarilans doing their own thing outside of the hive. That would be cool.

Because Generation kill and One Bullet Away are overall great books to read if you're at all trying to understand how a modern professional military acts at the lowest levels and what their culture really is. They shouldn't be all you read (and watch, fuck Ferrando) of course but they're a solid foundation to critically think your way towards certain situations when combined with knowledge of training and doctrine. Perusing some field manuals can go a long way too.

Genuinely evil Human protagonists. I want to see stories about a Human who travels the galaxy hunting aliens (who are sapient a lot of the times) for trophies, like some old school British safari hunter.
Whether the female alien in the story is a meek maiden who he kidnaps and takes as his pet or also a dangerous huntress that bonds with him over their shared hobby of murdering things, it doesn't matter to me.

A few. I've already mentioned about Xipa's POV. I think that is my biggest gripe. Outside of that, I do not agree with the ally bugs being there. Not so much as "I despise them" but more as a means of this is a story of her & the species first colonized world. Since I do not wish to make this into a wall of text. I will end that part there. [spoiler]Two new characters were introduced. I can't help but feel as though that they'll be relevant later when the ally bugs become more prominent in the story. Outside of that, it felt like filler especially with the fact that they're not prevalent when Vos reveals his rag tag team to Xipa.[/spoiler]

I'm currently on Chapter 5, contrary to what I've said from before. I do like the characters. At least their first impressions. Even the furry wasn't unbearable - yet.

Outside of that, the story has been quite enjoyable. Though I must admit that the Prologue is by far my favorite moment in the story. Speaking of which, [spoiler]I might be blind but I would've liked to have seen Chala's strengths more if that makes any sense.[/spoiler]
