You can look at how popular the harem mod for BADiK, probably the best executed example of 1, to see why it quickly becomes a problem to force players to replay the entire fucking game because they didn't like girl A quite as much as girl B but did enjoy them both, or how many people get annoyed at having to replay Bare Witness and drop it after their first run through despite being short game because routes are inherently going to have massive overlap of shared scenes. The only problem with a 3 would be if you somehow make a character so abhorent that people don't like them less, but actively dislike and don't want to see but also make them a central character. There's also the midway between the two where you have a main cast that is the dedicated harem and will be important, and then have side chicks that are optional fluff but don't change the story.

Sandbox grinding is the number one most dumb sin committed by WEG devs, and anyone that has it will rightfully get shit on and as anon pointed out, nonlinear at that level means zero reactivity which means that either you have a bunch of completely independent stories which will seem dumb and contrived or you have to progress the ones you don't like in order to progress the ones you do.

A proper 1 game doesn't involve playing the same shit with a little difference depending on which girl you choose. Instead the entire plot diverges once you enter a girl's route. You don't "replay the whole game" you basically get a whole new game

The "turn-based combat" is clown tier but I like the open world/exploration/base building/make your own empire from zero to hero stuff. With slave trainer mechanics, of course, and there's a surprising amount of unique characters to play with.
Grindy as fuck, of course, but it scatched some autistic itch I've been craving for. It's definitely better than most wegs that are VNs pretending to be games.

I think the best way to do a weg is to let players pursue every LI, but over time slowly force them to choose between two, and then choose between another two, until they have their final girl. That way they can save at the choice junctures instead of replaying the whole game.
