Big cats confirmed is the south

Phantom big cats are a proven hoax. This is just another one.

◯ How rare is it to spot a black panther?

pretty rare. the only person I know 3rd hand to see ( and photograph ) one was my friends grandma in vermont. That was back in the 1990s though.

That looks to be a leopard, rather than a jaguar.
So someone has likely released a pet they were too scared to handle anymore. Or lost a pet they didn't keep properly confined.

Seeing big cats loose in the south is nothing new, there was a tiger wandering around Houston a while ago. Still all the boomers who took a grainy photo of a feral cat and called it a panther will feel vindicated

Definitely a zoo escapee. Or maybe from some rich persons private menagerie.

How can you tell? It does appear to have a long tail, but is that enough? are there any other clues?

yeah, more likely it's some kind of native ancestral spirit guardian.

They absolutely do because I've absolutely seen one in person in SC
Now whether or not it was an actual panther or just a melanistic mountain lion, I cannot tell you.

The long tail is usually enough, but jaguars are way bulkier

Anonymous No.5051938 [Report]

Definitely the tail's holding position. Jags don't curl theirs quite so strongly and theirs is way stumpier, like half that length.

>>5051895
They say that pumas don't have the genetic markers to allow for melanism.
But a melanistic lynx was caught on film for the first time. Maybe they're wrong. A black puma would be so much more impressive looking than a black leopard or jaguar.

"Melanocytic" critters happen pretty often in Nature and "Black Panthers" are nothing new. This does look like an escapee from a private collection/zoo though. Florida Panthers in the SE virtually never do this and neither do "Mountain Lions" out West. Mostly jaguars, and leopards.

Just remember if you ever come face to face with a big cat, pretty much the same rules apply as all felines
Don't run and act like prey
Look at it and slowly blink, then act uninterested while maintaining a confident posture
You will both most likely go about your business
Unless he really hangry then act like you are the most terrifying monster on earth but dont put him in a position where he can't escape

There's a cougar species native to Florida. It's highly endangered, but nobody disputes its existence. It's probably just a melanistic Florida panther, it looks way too small to fit the black panther legends from out west.

We're not talking about the florida panther, we're talking about your average everyday catamount and painter that marches up and down appalachia all the time but that the government covers up, presumably so businesses can operate more freely.

It gives NPCs a modicum of meaning in their otherwise dull and unremarkable lives. By pushing that everything has some sinister conspiracy behind it, they liken themselves as a kind of freedom fighter trying to take down the...system, or something. And how do they engage in this resistance? By posting frog memes and calling everyone that disagrees with them a Jew/tranny/fed.

Nothing that regular mountain lions, coyotes and bears don’t already do. And they’ve acknowledged way more dangerous exotic animals like >>5051949 being on the loose before so why not a black panther

Anonymous No.5058871 [Report] >>5058929

There is, and it's called the Endangered Species Act. Every endangered species effectively shuts down economic activity in their range. Cryptids are worth more to the government extinct than confirmed alive.

>Now whether or not it was an actual panther or just a melanistic mountain lion
They're the same animal bro just with different hair colour, so is a cougar

because the reply amounts to
>Why would the government lie? You're just a schizo!
Why the hell wouldn't they lie? If you live in la-la land, you deserve to be ridiculed, not debated.

>>5058807
As is this isn't a strawman
>By posting frog memes and calling everyone that disagrees with them a Jew/tranny/fed
There are already cases where the government deliberately ignored the presence of endangered plants and wildlife so construction projects can happen.
Anonymous No.5058929 [Report]
>>5058871
The endangered species act means nothing for escaped exotics. If there really were black panthers the government would be free to remove them because they’re non-native dangerous animals. You can literally go to an exotics ranch and pay to shoot endangered species in Texas
>>5058899
>>5058928
Cool. This doesn’t answer how industry and tourism are affected or how the danger posed to people and pets is any different to mountain lions
