They don’t. The rats have to have toxoplasmosis first (it makes them attracted to the scent of cat urine) otherwise adult rats are capable of outsmarting cats and cats dont fuck with them. Cats have never killed off rodents. They help keep their population strong by killing the sick. Otherwise cats live off birds and reptiles/amphibians.

Cats also have a paradoxical effect on mice. Wild mice are less adapted to cats and more likely to have toxo. Pest mice are the opposite so they thrive around cats.
