I've only read one. Hound of the Baskervilles. I enjoyed it, though it seemed more like a Watson story to me. And although I did enjoy it, I never had the inclination to ready any of the others. It was a little predictable that Holmes was hiding out in the moores and so was the killer's identity. However, I did not deduce that from the same evidence that Holmes did, but instead because of the limited suspects that the story presented.

and who portrayed him better: Basil Rathbone, Jeremy Brett, Benedict Cumberbatch, or Robert Downey Jr.

(fuck, looking this up who the hell HASN'T played Sherlock? Tom Baker?! John Cleese? Leonard Nimoy? Orson Welles?)

What I like about this movie is back in the 80's some guy in my state started the first Pizza home delivery service which went gang busters forcing Pizza Hut to buy him out for quite a tidy some. Twice he was interviewed about where he got the idea from and he'd always respond with a smirk on his face "some old American movie". He never did mention the title.

I like Jeremy Brett, but Benedict Cumberbatch and Robert Downey Jr. did a great job too, liked them both.

My favorites are the government ones, I don't really know why:
Bruce-Partington Plans
Second Stain

Both books drag on quite a bit I feel when they go into flashback mode. I prefer the short stories.

I can only think of The War Service of Sherlock Holmes where Watson is not narrating.
