Just tipped 0% on a $63 bill at a steakhouse

That's $12 saved that will go into my investment portfolio. I haven't tipped since last year, but I always feel good when I tip 0% at sit-down restaurants. It takes courage, discipline, and strength of character to follow my principles that go against social conditioning and societal norms.

I still feel some pangs of guilt (it's hard to completely break free from the childhood indoctrination on tipping). But thanks to this board's Reservoir Dog threads outlining all the reasons why I shouldn't tip. Thank you Tarantino. You really gave me wings to fly!

Americans are insane when it comes to tipping. Here in Europe if you'd get a bill over 63 Euros, you'd pay 65 and say "keep the change", and that would be totally fine and accepted.

I heard this comes from freeing the slaves in America and getting around to paying them when employing them afterwards. Not shipping them all back was yet another mistake for which they still pay dearly.

it could be like that still in some states, but now, tipping is paying for preferential treatment - if you are a regular somewhere, and they know you tip an appropriate amount, you will be served before people they don't recognize

I always tip in restaurants. For delivery, if they are under legal age, I tip, if legal age, I offer oral instead.
