I just did an interview for a promotion I have been working hard to get for the past year.

I'm not getting it, and they said it was because I had a PIP five years ago.

is this just how life is?

Was this about a merit based promotion, or was it a "I have been here for a long time, I think I deserve this" promotion?

If it's a merit based one, just walk, and get your promotion at another company. Otherwise it's like that.

That isn't how life is. That is just the reason they decided to give you. Is anyone else getting the promotion? Is their performance identical to yours aside from the PIP? Or is it someone's child?

Sounds like you need to find a job at a other company. They have no loyalty to you. Why should you be loyal to them?

when they didn't give me a raise I just stopped trying like everyone else around me. It affected the highest earners in a way, but what do I care, I'll work hard and someone else will earn 2-3 times more than me

time to find another company. they'll only give you a raise/promotion if they have to.
they WILL use that PIP on you forever, to deny you raises. of course you'll get more work, just not more reward.
