by itself and by current year standards? No. When it came out and/or with a bunch of mods that modernise it? yes. easily the best sandbox game bethesda has ever made. if you can think it, there's probably a mod for it

It would depend on what you like. I enjoy skyrim a lot. Mods, and making my own mods for it, makes it wonderful.
Love it in fact.
My only gripe is it crashes, no matter what, on any system, with or without patches.
Morrowind is nearly perfectly stable, but oblivion and skyrim? Crash city. Skyrim crashes less than oblivion though, so note that I guess.

Pretty much the best single player quest based game. You might be disappointed if you like games with more fast paced and strategic elements though, it's not very challenging and the combat is very basic. Basically it's good for the storytelling in side quests.

unironically yes. mostly cuz of its atmosphere and modding capability.
Its main quest is OK, the guild quests vary but are generally better, the random side-quests have some bangers.
Soulsfags cry about the combat not being rollslop but its fine if you just want to mash Mouse1 & W. Go with Stealth Archer or Conjuration/Destruction magic if you're new.
the DLCs are less good but you'll get a good 20 hours each out of Dawnguard and Dragonborn.

Pros:
>god tier OST
>god tier atmosphere, everyone loves and can relate to snow capped mountain peaks and nordic log cabins
>decent RNG, you can just wander around and find/encounter random shit even after 100s of hours

Cons:
>crashes constantly if its modded incorrectly
>bethesdajank, the usual NPCs doing weird shit or clipping through things that all of their games have
>there's like 4 or 5 different bundled editions cuz shit company is too lazy to just make a new game, they'd rather release Skyrim again

All in all, if you can pick it up for under $30 you'll probably sink 200-500 hours into it over the next few years. Your first playthru will be around 50-100 hours and after that you'll probably do a 20 hour playthru every 6-12 months or so.

Generally, yeah, it's a good game.

I don't really enjoy it as much as others in the series, though, because it lacks a lot of the depth from the other games. If you're more interested in the action than the rpg, that's probably the best one, but if you like a more immersive experience with more traditional rpg elements, then you might try Oblivion or Morrowind instead. Or Daggerfall/Arena, if you don't mind the old crpg aesthetic

With the largest modding community of any game, there's endless replayability with it.
I'll shamelessly say I have like 9,000 hours in it.
Modded correctly, it is one of the best games out there, and it is just plain comfy to chill to.

Could of been a lot better. Throw some balanced weapon and armour mods and a tweeked level loot list for locations and it'll really shine.

It's called lore. It adds texture to the game. You don't have to read said books, they are entirely optional. Elder scrolls has extensive lore, and its part of what makes the games enjoyable (for some) if you can ignore the buggyness that comes along with the actual play.

I built a gaming pc with the intention of playing Skyrim, right before it came out in 2011, after my girlfriend broke up with me after I played too much oblivion on a different computer that I also put together for her to play Starcraft 2 on. Skyrim is awesome and the modding community is great, and it's full of creative people growing their development skills.

That said, Morrowind is my home.

Nigger, I write entire books to add to Skyrim. You don't even know, and no. I do not mean the tiny pamphlets found in the base game. Entire fucking books! LMAO xD

Maybe you feel that way because after nearly a quarter of a century, people have created video games that are prettier, or not as clunky. But they were built on a strong mycelial foundation that was laid down in Morrowind.
