It makes sense when you think about it. Prebuscent boys pretty much look and feel like girls and since they are hairless and cannot get pregnant, they were the perfect substitute. Before porn, men needed to let their sexual urges out without making too many babies. Boys were the preferred choice as they felt like women and using their thighs/body for sexual release was a better option than getting a young girl pregnant or destroying her virginity, which was prized and saved for their husbands in ancient times.
Also, young boys learned about sex and became sexually aware from the interactions making them better prepared and able to enjoy their sexuality when their time came to be with a woman. It may seem backward to us now, but it made perfect sense back then.

It was almost a right of passage to be a playtoy for men, then when you started maturing yourself, you would get married by 15 or so, experience the warmth of a woman and in your 20s, had your own young boys to let your sexual urges out on.
