Russian programmer here, used to work at SAP in Germany. Tired of nonstop Russophobia, treated like a criminal just for being Russian. Got a call from a fintech in Seattle, they want me to interview.

I’m pro-Putin. My grandfather fought Nazis in Dresden alongside Americans. Now Germany sides with actual Nazis from Ukraine and lectures me on values? Hypocrites.

If I get this job, I’m leaving. At least in the US the hate is honest, and some still remember who helped win WWII. Let the EU rot

Any tips how to live in budget ?
Isn't subway like 5$ could fill you up?

Subway is horribly overpriced now and the presence of people justifiably sick of what jews are doing to their nation does not justify being a murderous attack dog for jews.

trying to answer seriously and not get baited by nationalusm retardation.

For the most part, programmers are a LOT better paid in the US than Europe. Since you are anonymous can you just tell us the pay? If you are making over 150K USD per year you will not have to pinch pennies, but you might struggle to live in the most desirable areas of Seattle.

W.r.t. Russophobia you might not find the US as friendly as you are imagining. Most Americans think that they won WWII and discount the enormous importance of the Soviet Union. Culture war retardation has made a lot of cuckservatives think they like Putin, but like all culture war stuff this will probably not last.

That said, seeing Russians as representatives of the Russian government is probably pretty uncommon in the US, even amongst people who are very pro-Ukraine. I suspect it won't matter much to you in practice. Unless of course you make being pro-Putin a big part of your personality and ensure that all your coworkers know.

>Any tips how to live in budget ?
in Seattle, your biggest cost, both in raw terms and in comparison to other parts of the U.S., will be rent
your choices will be to get roommates in a desirable area, live outside the city and accept the commute (you may be able to do some remote work from home), or pay through the nose to live by yourself in a desirable area
>Isn't subway like 5$ could fill you up?
subway hasn't offered $5 subs for many years; it's not very good food, either; their bread is full of sugar, and deli meats give you cancer
in the Seattle area, you'll have plenty of access to fresh seafood, farmer's markets, and upscale grocery stores

OP, most in US have mixed feelings on Ukraine-Russia as both were viewed as allies and helping big-time in War on Terror. It's like UK vs. Argentina on drugs, and really has screwed up US offensive against Islamo-extremists. Also, Putin is basically annihilating Russian Whites--Americans won't say that, but the Rodina is last reserve of Whites left along with Ukraine. Plus Russian/Ukrainian immigrants here HATE Putin for that reason plus don't like what appears to be his neo-communism nationalizing everything very much--and thus remind Americans constantly the silly United Russia Party always threatening to seize Alaska conquer USA with China (which just announced US is historically Chinese).

Then again, Putin looks like unreliable Dobby versus popular Ukrainians in US who are all famous actresses. If forced to choose, average US joe who doesn't follow politics will go with pretty actress.

In your favor Washington State cities (countryside is different) are filled with pro-communists who think Putin is secretly bringing Stalinism back and will help them conquer the USA.

The Seattle metro area has a small but significant Russian population in the east suburb / city of Bellevue. There are a bunch of Ukrainians here too but they're generally in the region south of the 2 big lakes.

For the most part, the population is pro Ukrainian but don't know anything about it. Your family fighting Nazi's isn't going to buy you any status so I wouldn't bother bringing it up with anyone. If you're going to find anyone showing positive feelings towards 1945 Russia, it's going to be younger and aggressively socialist /communist types that you can find around Capital Hill in Seattle.

Living here is very expensive. Rent is going to be your biggest expense by far, so if you can find a roommate quickly, you'll be in a much better position financially. The second most expensive thing is going to be food, but you need to be careful because most food in the US is basically slow release poison. If you don't want to turn into the average American, without going broke, then you'll need to dedicate a bunch of time to finding good ingredients and cooking your own food.

Expect to spend a lot more time commuting that you currently are, and expect it to be very inconvenient to not have a car. A 1 way commute to work with a personal vehicle will take the average person about an hour. It'll be longer if you have to rely on public transportation. This is part of the reason that rents are so high. People will spend the money to not commute.

As for the people here, they're generally unfriendly and don't want to talk to you if they don't know you. Conversations are very transactional and people generally don't know how to communicate otherwise.

On the positive notes. The weather here is actually really nice in the summer and mild in the winter. The forests and mountains nearby are fantastic and there's plenty of stuff to do.

Also obligatory: Fuck off. We're full.

I used to live in Seattle but left because it was too expensive. I’m also a computer toucher, but I work remote so I’d rather live in a place where a house doesn’t cost a million goddamn dollars.

Seattle overall is way less lefty than people think, at least with economic stuff. It’s more soft libertarian than anything. They won’t care if you’re Russian as long as you aren’t publically pro-Putin. I’m an actual leftist. Among lefties, people really do massively respect what the USSR did to combat fascism. The USSR ain’t around anymore, of course. I’m not pro Putin per se, but the enemy of my enemy is my friend and all that, so there’s still a decent number of people not hostile to Putin. Just don’t go advertising you like him.

Also, you should be able to live fine on our salary, but subway is not a good deal and is awful. Just cook for yourself. Better yet, get a decent rice cooker that doubles a slow cooker and make meals in bulk.

You’ll want to live close to where you work if you don’t want to kill yourself. The traffic in Seattle is worse than you possibly could think. Either live within walking distance, near a light rail station (if your work is on the one pathetic line), or bike (faster than driving).

It’s better to pay more to live close. It’s less awful and you can save a good bit of money from not needing a car.
