むかしむかし、おじいさんが竹やぶへ行くときらきら光る炊けがありました。
おじいさんが炊けを切ると中には可愛らしい女の子が眠っていました。
「かぐや姫と名づけて大切に育てましょう」
おばあさんもおおよろこびです。
かぐや姫が来てからは炊けを切るたびに小判が出てきて家はおかねもちになりました。
やがて、かぐや姫は美しい姫になりました。
ある日評判を聞いた帝がかぐや姫に合いに来ていいました。
「どうか私と結婚してください」
おじいさんとおばあさんはおおよろこびです。
ところがかぐや姫は悲しそうにいいました。
『私は月の国で生まれました。おじいさんおばあさんと、離れるのはとても辛いけれど、次の満月のよるに月からむかえが来るのです。」
次の満月のよるになりました。
『美しい姫を月に帰してはならなぬ」
帝の家来たちは鎧を来てかぐや姫の部屋のまえで月からのむかえを待っています
その時、急に空が輝き始め一大の車が降りてきました。
眩しすぎて家来たちは目を開けることが出来ません。
「おじいさんおばあさんさようなら。」
かぐや姫は車に乗り行ってしまいました。
おじいさんとおばあさんは悲しみましたがどうすることも出来ませんでした。

Once upon a time, an old man went to a bamboo grove and there was a brightly shining shoot of bamboo.
The old man cut the shining bamboo shoot and found a beautiful young girl sleeping inside.
The old man said, "I shall name you Kaguya-hime and raise you with great care"
His wife was also delighted.
Every time the shining bamboo shoot from which Kaguya-hime originated is cut, a small piece of gold comes out. The old man takes it home and becomes wealthy.
Before long, Kaguya-hime grows to be a beautiful princess.
One day, the Emperor hears rumors about Kaguya-hime, and goes to meet her.
"Please, marry me" he says.
The old man and his wife are delighted.
Kaguya-hime responded solemnly
I was born in the Kingdom of the Moon. Though it is painful to part from the old man and woman, the next full moon approaches and I must return.
The next full moon approached.
The emperor said, "The beautiful princess must not return to the moon."
The emperor's royal guards came clad in armor and waited for the moon's return in front of Kaguya-hime's room.
Suddenly, a large and radiant rickshaw fell from the sky.
The light from the rickshaw was so dazzling that the royal guards couldn't open their eyes.
"Farewell, old man and old woman" said Kaguya-hime as she rode the rickshaw and departed into the heavens.
Distraught, the old man and old woman were helpless to do anything to stop her.
