Did the apartment not collect rent or ever make her resign some kind of lease for 42 years? I'm confused about how this can happen in an apartment. I could understand if it was a home she owned outright, but if she was renting an apartment, surely somebody would have come knocking well before 42 years. Really only relevant for the first several months. If nobody investigates the smell and nobody who knew her wonders why they haven't seen her, the smell goes away and any new neighbors just figure if anyone lives there they keep to themselves.

Most of the time when you look into these, they had some sort of automatic payment set up or otherwise things were handled by a third party trust or agency.
