As to why God did not intervene? Because it would defeat the point.
The short of it is that God wants us to choose them despite the hardship. If God were like a magic wish fairy constantly making life awesome all the time then it would be an easy choice. Notice that whenever things go bad the first reaction is either anger at God or outright denial of Gods existence?
This is like saying you love your wife but then ditching her when she is sick because she can no longer have sex. You didnt actually love her, you just liked the sex. Sort of the same deal.
Also, hardship helps us grow. In the same way you cant constantly coddle your children like a helicopter parent and expect them not to come out fucked up.
Its kinda fucked but remember God sent their only son to die in a horrible manner.
