I don't understand why companies are so resistant to a 4 day work week. Every single trial that has been held with a 4 day work week has shown positive results. The big wigs must be sadists and get off of seeing people suffer.

Most places 2 weeks paid vacation a year is sort of the entry level vacation allowance. Depending on policy time rolls over year to year, and you usually get more time with seniority.
Things like sick time are usually considered separate from vacation time. On top of whatever holidays are observed across the company (christmas, new years, 4th of july, etc).

The only jobs that don't give you paid time off are shitty service jobs, and even fast food will give you PTO if you qualify (working full time hours over a fiscal year).
If its gig or contract work well then that's just the nature of the beast.
But yeah, I know when I was working as a line cook in a kitchen I scheduled my time off by just telling my boss I couldn't work days X, Y, Z. Sometimes you just trade shifts with someone (cover me friday and I'll take your shitty shift next week).

No, Shlomo, productivity did, in fact, skyrocket with the advent of computers and other types of automatization, with the excess value being sucked up by parasitic elements.

It's not just about pay, it's about the amount of work.
People don't need to work as much for the same output.
The only reason they do is so the parasites at the top can pump out more shit, which they make as flimsy as possible so it survives until the warranty period at best.

The next day they deannounced it. Turns out our american office heard about it and kicked off, declaring that if they weren't going to do it, we couldn't either.

I've done 4 day and 5 day work weeks in corporate tech sales, and have a reasonable explanation for an advantage of a 5 day work week. When I did 4 days, I tremendously enjoyed having a 3rd day off and also had an easier time planning for longer vacations since I only had to get 4 days off and bookend two weekends to get a total of 10 days off. However, even though my work life balance was much better, 4 days at the office meant one day when I was not at the office, so my clients were up shit's creek if they needed something on the day I wasn't there, which typically ended up being a monday. My boss stayed on the 5 day to act as coverage for major issues, but obviously the extra work did not make my boss happy and meant she was working more hours. Now that I am back to 5 days, there is a more equitable distribution of the workload required for my role and I am available every day of the work week to handle urgent matters. I do definitely miss the perks of having an extra day off, but I unquestionably make more money working 5 days. The solution is to give each employee the option to choose, but standardization simplifies scheduling.

I wish it was that easy, but there are situations that can crop up regardless or how society views the work week. For instance, I had an order we were originally going to ship stocked inventory through FedEx by standard freight out of Memphis, but a last minute change to the end user's bill of materials meant we had to partially drop ship the order straight from the manufacturer in China to meet the deadline set for the bid. Had I been out of the office that day, I would have missed out on a nearly $200k order that would have been fulfilled by another entity.

>>936721353
While the busiest of people would happily have me working 12 hours a day 7 days a week, the 8-5 work schedule acts as a benchmark for expected activity, so the entire industry has adapted to the expectation that if somebody reaches out to me on any given day, I will see it and respond that day or sometime in that week. If we all had 4 days, how could I possibly know who is available from another company on any given day?
