Think of it this way. If you're losing an argument, but then make a witty joke to change the subject, if you make the audience laugh, they'll think you won. If your opponent tries to bring everyone back on point, he'll look like a sore loser desperately trying to regain control, even if he's right and makes complete sense.
This is why I always say joking means you lost. I've never used it in person before though, but I have a hunch a crowd would just boo and say "that's not funny."

it is, as always, not as simple as it seems. It's advertisers exploiting the fact that we're likely to trust people we're familiar with and fond of and consider successful. that might seem illogical, but if you consider that we're supposed to be living in small communities of maybe less than a hundred people, it makes total sense. the people who did well in that community and were popular would be the ones that made smart choices, so it would be wise to listen to what they say. celebrities are just that on a global scale.
