Also, it isn't directly related, but the cost of gas also has an impact on the price of everything else because everything has transportation costs in its manufacture and in its distribution. The higher gas prices are, the higher transportation costs are, which makes the price of everything go up.

It's called being able to regulate trade, and tax shit. Government can DIRECTLY fuck with anything sold on the market. Gas is taxed by state, that is a great example of price fluctuation based on what a government body said so. That is why CA gas is expensive as fuck, while it's cheap as fuck in red states. Some things even need permits! Like alcohol, weed, cigs, etc. You can't even make money on those with out big daddy government saying you can. And at the national level you have policies and what everyone was recently kvetching about: tariffs.
