I was a Young Earth Creationist until recently. I also believed that the Earth was flat. I was quite literally a Biblical literalist. Now I'm a Spherical Old Earth Creationist. I wouldn't have changed had I considered the possibility of being wrong.

I think I was about 19 when I kept encountering religious ideas, especially young earth creationism, when I had mostly been brought up to think science was the way to understand things.

So I tried my best to give both ideas a good shake. I read a number of Christian books and several books of the Bible. I read about other religions. I also delved deep into science, especially evolutionary biology.

I came to the conclusion that religious ideas about the world are stupid rambling nonsense and they prevent you from asking questions that may have difficult answers or that might challenge people in power. Faith shuts off that questioning part of your brain so you just assume God did the thing you're asking about instead of taking responsibility for your own actions and thoughts and inquiring further and trying to understand how things work.

So I would consider myself an atheist.
