he was awarded 1 million dollars but he refused the prize, first without even giving an explanation (IIRC he just didn't reply any e-mails or invites to the ceremony), but then claimed that his work was based off of other people who deserved the prize as much as he did.
this was especially astonishing, because everyone is working off of other people's previous work and no one ever had any issue claiming the laurels for themselves, so it came off as a blanket criticism towards the entire maths community.
I remember there was one american mathematician who was EXTREMELY upset that perelman was just objectively better than him, solving in a couple years what he dedicated his entire life attempting to solve without ever coming close, but he was especially seething that he didn't accept the prize money, which an american mind simply can't comprehend.
