It's not just beaches and so on. Larger city parks around here often have areas designated for nudity too.

Most swimming areas (pools, lakes and such) have either cabin showers or gendered group showers. Music festivals usually gendered group shower tents.

If you were to shower with trunks on in a group shower setting, you'd get nasty looks.

At a public pool, they usually have rules saying you're only allowed to enter the pool after properly showering first, and "properly" means nude. They do not have people watching you shower to make sure you do it right, but you can be sure that some old guy or gal will rat you out to staff if you don't do it properly.

Saunas/Spas around here are usually nudity required. Most are co-ed, some or women-only. Men-only isn't a thing.

I'm a guy and this whole period took place for me between the ages of like 6-14. My mother was raised nudist as her parents were very hippie-ish in the 60s. She carried a much more blasé attitude to nudity to our upbringing but we weren’t full-on nudist. I should point out they kept up the punishments when people came over and this time the punishment was only shortened because we got invited to some family friends house and they didn’t want drive me a few hours away in the nude (plus explain to these friends)…

This whole thing started because like most kids, when we were much younger we went naked to swim in the local lake. We slowly became aware of our nudity by age 5 or 6, but our mother refused to buy us bathing suits. So I remember being forced to go naked around people was those trips to the lake before my parents finally bought us suits.

When we were much younger (so before we became self aware of our nudity) it was great to be like that swimming down the lake. But once you realise most other kids are wearing something or they point it out… it becomes a bit humiliating. We asked our parents to buy us suits but they refused until we were a year or two older after my brothers friend’s birthday, so those last years were quite humiliating.

Both he, I and our sister got actual punishments for a day or a few days or whatever, that were deliberately meant to be unpleasant. Being the only one naked around other people (especially non-friends or family) isn’t as fun when you’re actually in that situation and certainly isn’t when you’re growing up.

Any family reunion (not that we had those a lot) we were expected to stay undressed if we were being punished. My grandparents on my mother’s side would come over a few times and saw me twice and my sister once during a punishment and were obviously ok with it, being former nudists themselves. But I remember a few times being naked with cousins and other family members. There’s a few photos of me being shielded behind someone in family pics so as to not reveal that I’m completely naked lol. My cousins saw all three of us nude a few times, not only because of punishments but also because one set of cousins had a pool. Not only were we expected to go nude, but my mother did as well. Our cousins all wore suits of course but those situations were less embarrassing than punishments. Being the only one naked felt very awkward at times, especially when you’re forced to hang out with people your age you don’t see often.

As for non family or friends, there were plenty of times all three of us were either seen or had to spend a lot of with people while naked. As young kids, people tend to not be very concerned, but the older we got, the more my parents had to explain the situation sometimes. My sister got a punishment while we were having our bathroom refitted and so I remember her being mortified that the workmen and plumbers got to see her. The postman knew the situation quite well, and I would often see him passing when I was going nude round the front garden or close neighbourhood. I also remember a time that wasn't technically a punishment where we were down by the lake and my dad went back early with our bags to start on a BBQ. According to them it was genuinely an oversight and they completely forgot that the bags had our clothes in. When we all came back from swimming and wanted to get dressed, our mother realised. The lake was about a 20 minute walk from our house, partly by the lakefront park area and partly by quiet residential roads. There was only the one towel my mother was sitting on, and that went to my sister I guess because she was the oldest and a girl. She wasn’t thrilled about walking back in just a towel but my brother and I were furious we had to walk back completely nude.

I can only speak for me, but it definitely got worse in some respects over time, but easier in others.

Even in the beginning we knew what nudity was, but it was less embarrassing to be naked around others. Still humiliating but probably not to the same level. However in the beginning, being seen by friends and family was new, and so very humiliating.

After a while, we were probably more embarrassed about being seen by people naked, but we had also been seen by the people who would regularly see us naked. So in a way it was less embarrassing as friends were used to it and so were we. New people and strangers was more embarrassing in early teenage years yes.
