So my boss has always been an asshole and he can do whatever he wants because he's been at the company for 40 fucking years (he won't retire), but today I feel like he crossed the line and now I'm thinking about finding a new job, even though I like my current job other than dealing with the asshole boss. What do?

record every conversation you have with him in secret, if he does something that is a major violation you can get him removed

Impossible since I work with loud machines. Even if I could, he's too careful to slip up. He's been doing this for a long time and knows how to do it right. What happened today is he got mad at me for not doing my extra jobs that he makes me do because he doesn't want to, because on Monday he told me to just do my normal job because we are "swamped" and so I stayed up there and yesterday I did the same and he didn't say anything. Well today he comes to me first thing in the morning and says I was supposed to be doing my extra jobs all day yesterday and I did not, and do I remember what he told me. I said no, he must have told me this once two months ago and I didn't write it the fuck down, so I just forgot, and now he wants to make me feel like a bad worker and like I'm stupid and just forgot what he told me, when he just told me two days ago to stay up there and that's what I was doing. I don't fucking know man. I just want to work hard but that's not enough for some people

I would not allow him to do any jobs that should be his.
>No, you're alright guv', let me do it
Become indispensable, and don't worry about the wages. I've ended up running half a dozen companies this way. Yes, I'm a millionaire, and yes, I'm old enough to be your grandpa.

I'm on track to take his position when he retires because I show up every day and work hard, but I've been there for 18 months now and this guy is just too tough to deal with. I'll give it another few days to make my decision. I always tell myself that he's tough but fair and that I can always improve, but after today I feel like that's not true and he's just an asshole.

I can't judge your situation, friendo, but I would lull the guy to sleep. Someone will notice, offer him early retirement and offer you the job. If you like the work, then just work. You'll never tire of things you love doing. I've worked 18 hour days at times. Slept at the company. Just to make sure no one is stealing my work. Never cared one bit if I got remunerated for it either. Because I know I will have your job at the end of the day. I worked for an asshole once, but the guy was the son of the owner. I got him out in 6 months, took his job, and got the owner to consider me more of a son than his real flesh and blood. True story.

Don't have an office job I just like the movie
>>937198056
I need to deal with it because it's good money and the job is not that bad, it's just this asshole that's making me insane
>>937198202
I wish he would retire, but part of his personality is he loves money and literally can't have enough. The mother fucker owns a brand new $90k truck, owns a home, has no telling how much in 401k and investments, and he still needs more. He's got some mental illness but I'm not sure what it is. He's just very particular

Then help him make more money. You know his weakness, which is great, because you can now exploit it. Don't hold back. You resist because you begrudge him the money. Turn it around. Go the other way. You don't stop an asshole alcoholic from drinking, you supply him more and more. Drink yourself to death, please. You don't consider excess money and excess alcohol to be the same thing, but they actually are. Try to see the truth of it, and remove your handbrake. Trust me.

I think if I gave him a million dollars he would still come to work. He's that sick in the head. Nothing wrong with having ambition and wanting nice things, but at a certain point it becomes an obsession. His only weakness is his old age, which will force him to retire for health reasons at some point. He already eats fast food and drinks soda every day, so I don't know what else I could do. This guy is too stubborn to die or get sick. Assholes tend to be like that

Wish you all the best, bro. Try changing your perspective so it's bearable. If you can't, then just leave and go to a competitor. Nothing wrong with that. I've moved continents with a few hundred bucks in my pocket, without even a job offer. Sometimes people need a reset and a totally fresh outlook on life. It feels amazing to start all over again.

I will try my best. I'm a tough cookie. If I can just survive 1 or 2 more years I'm sure he will be gone, but we'll see how tomorrow goes first. Have a good one, anon.

Where the fuck is "up there?' If you're too stupid to recount a story correctly you probably did fuck up.

Sorry it was a lot to type. I work primarily in one department which is "up there" but I also work in another department which I walk to about every 30 minutes to check on the machines. I'm currently running 3 machines and if any little thing isn't working properly or my area gets a little too messy then my asshole boss, who mostly just walks around doing nothing or sits at his desk doing nothing, will find me and then make me feel like an idiot for doing something slightly wrong

Anon, I have been working for nearly 20 years and I'm reasonably successful. But despite many promotions to quite senior positions, in terms of percentage increase in salary, nothing ever compared to switching companies.
I think my *worst* increase in salary when moving was ~18% and my best ever promotion was a ~13%.

If you like your role, doing it in another firm is likely to be as fulfilling.
Out of interest, one of my former bosses, the Head of Credit at a mid-sized commercial bank, had a thing with his friend that they wouldn't look for jobs until the 4 year mark, and then they'd hit the street to see what's out there. And without fail, every 4 years they got much better roles and moved.
