While articles typically reference the oil company's (Cenovus) misrepresentations of the issue being a wellbore breach, the issue ongoing for 2 months indicate the issue could be breached caprock of the formation.

Produced water is surfacing in nearby fields.

This oilfield is currently SAGD, using steam to liquify and extract heavy oil.

wellbore leak and the surfacing fluid may be fluid trapped in the ground. But it could be breached caprock, which would mean the field/zone is garbage now.
